Wow...On one of the easiest runs around?!
Maybe it was a beginner? You can easily hit 60km/hr on that stretch, good luck vs. a tree at that speed especially if you're not wearing a helmet, which wouldn't do you any good anyways if it were body trauma.

I hope your comment is meant as genuine surprise and not meant in a condescending manner that would indicate only experts on extreme terrain run this kind of risk. We've all been beginners at some point, and too many coolio fucktards out there seem to forget that.

Can happen to anyone, anytime, on any terrain and this is a sad situation. Let's all have fun and be safe.

^Exactly. You can go balls to the wall on groomers.

RIP and condolences. Let's all ride safe.

It's a dangerous sport and we all run the risks every time we strap in and head down the hills. A game of chance over time really. How many of us have broken bones/torn ligaments? Some people just get more unlucky than the rest of us and end up with more serious injuries. Let's not focus on helmet/no helmet since when it comes to trees the odds are it wouldn't have made a difference either way.

    Relevant stats:

The average skier death in CO is a thirty-seven years old experienced male skier wearing a helmet who loses control on an intermediate, groomed run and hits a tree.

The majority of deaths — 54 percent — occurred on blue, groomed runs, while 31 percent were on expert trails.

The increase in the number of people who wear helmets hasn’t resulted in fewer fatalities. Helmets are designed to protect riders at about 12 mph, while a skier or snowboarder who collides with a tree or another rider is typically going 25 to 40 mph.

More than 80 percent of ski deaths in Colorado are men.

Last season, 54 skiers and snowboarders died at ski areas within the U.S., which saw a total of 51 million ski visits, according to the National Ski Areas Association.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins recently estimated that about 600,000 people nationally are injured each year as a result of skiing and snowboarding.

Estimates are that about two injuries occur per 1,000 skier visits — a decrease of 50 percent since the mid-1970s.

if i was ging to ever hit a tree (by accident) it would probably be on banff ave... we always race down that run at the end of the day, and there is a lot of moving obstacles to avoid... we sure are not going slow from the top of wolverine to the bottom of goat's eye

What pisses me off is all the damn noobs you see flying down groomers.

You see so many skiers/boarders who cannot control themselves at the speeds they are going and its blatantly obvious. If you can't control yourself at the speed you are going, slow the fuck down so you're not putting everybody in danger.

Those "damn noobs" are no less dangerous than fuckwads who are just too damn cool for everybody and think they can control 130 km/hr on rockers in any given situation.

Finally got a splitboard set up pieced together and took it out to Kananaskis on the weekend for the first. Up high the snow really wasn't too bad, some of the best turns I've had in North America this year, which isn't saying a whole lot but fun none the less. Next year looking forward to doing a lot more exploring on it for sure.

I hope you have a speedy recovery and get back out there. There's something about being thigh deep in pow on a 40 degree slope that just brings it all together and makes sense in every way. When I did my knee in half a lifetime ago, it was literally 20-30 ft from a chairlift. Last time I got a concussion was on opening day 3 seasons ago, right by Wolverine Chair. We all know and run the risk, IMO worth it every time.

Thank fully I didn't tear anything just strained my knee bad and was only out for a month but not really skiing much the rest of this season regardless.

Was so torn between going snowboarding or riding my bike to the gym, now I'm glad I chose the gym today. Looking forward to a few more days tho!

I was at sunshine on sunday, and louise on saturday. Louise had fresh snow, had a few runs w/ fresh lines. However there are things that are covered by the fresh snow so that sucked.

Sunshine was all groomers, i didnt make it into the dive but i heard it was awesome.

Man I don't know where you skiied there but I thought it was like early to mid May conditions. The best part of my day was probanly the drive both ways with the roof down and skis hanging out of my car lol.

Mix of greens/blues with the GF and the Dive.

Sure it was a little slushy but it wasn't icy and it skied really nicely

being one of the worst ski years ever I wasn't disappointed.
