Japan alps have better terrain but Hokkaido gets way more snow. Its not unreasonable by any means, if you can find reasonable accommodation then its not really any more expensive than Calgary and you can always eat more cheaply (no point though, the food is so good).

Its like rockies vs selkirks. I haven't been to louise in years because it doesn't snow.

    Looks sick!
We are planning on hitting Tokyo end of March 2016 to see the sakura blossom, how's Niseko then?
Hit and miss since it's close to end of season?

Should we do Hakuba instead, closer to Tokyo?
I decided to keep the AC enRoute magazine from last month since they had an article about Hakuba

I was in niseko most of feb. Beginning of month was dump fest with multiple feet per day all day long of faceshot powder. Towards the end it warmed up and the hill got slow, lots of blurbird days and good park riding.

If its heavy at niseko, go 30 minutes to Rusutsu. Will blow your mind.

I'd go again haha. But I'd go to Niseko, you're going there for sick snow and to have a good time riding. The mountains there are no different than here, there can be dry spells. There are more dry spells and low snowfall days in Hakuba than Hokkaido. You'll have a better chance of hitting bigger and more frequent powder days in Hokkaido. If you were doing a season, then yea Hakuba. But I'm guessing 2-3 weeks so I'd say Hokkaido.

The amount of snow is immense. There are literally trenches, the roads, the sidewalks, all trenches. Its like those pictures of the train in Roger's pass after an avalanche. 10' walls. I'm tall and they were way over my head.

    Some Niseko

Asahi'dake. Nice snow but not enough vert. Really cool hostel there and onsen.

It's the highest mountain on Hokkaido but the tramway only goes up a small way.

    Summit

We went to some other resorts but ended up doing most of our skiing at Niseko because the other resorts were kind of shitty for whatever reason. Didn't go to Rusutsu but I guess we should've

    Bumping this.

Fiancee and I are going honeymooning in Japan in February. We will be in Japan for a total of 18 days and we want to spend 5-6 days in Niseko to ski/relax and enjoy the scenery.

What would be a nice romantic hotel to stay in? Does everyone suggest renting a car while in the Hokkaido? Any other suggestions/tips are much appreciated!

    Cheers

Nagano was so warm two years ago the season ended mid february!

    My favorite resorts in order
    -Kiroro
    -Sapporo Tiene
    -asahidake ropeway
    -Furano

Hakuba valley is cool because there is loads of resorts in a small area BUT getting there is a bit of a pain and it was really warm that winter.

Niseko was huge but wayyy to corporate and westernized. Also the most expensive. Would avoid if i go again.

Bummed that flights haven't dropped at all this winter.

We were going to plan a ski trip to Japan this year but it's not worth it when flights are floating around $1100-1300.

At least there is no rush to ski japan. There are other trips I want to check off before I turn 30.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I appreciate the information. Good to know that Niseko is a bit of a tourist trap, sounds like we'll be scaling our time back there to check out some of the other ski destinations. Hakuba Valley looks beautiful.

Depends what you want and what you ski. I'll be back in Feb to Niseko, Furano and Kiroro. If you stay in bounds you won't get the best-of. Especially Furano
