    Default ECE 22/05 motorcycle helmets.

    Anyone know more about ECE and why they are not accepted in Alberta? Are they accepted anywhere in Canada?

    My understanding is they are tougher standards than DOT and Snell.

    And what are your thoughts on shipping a helmet from Europe to Alberta without DOT approval? Will it be held up in Customs without a DOT sticker if inspected?

    I'm looking at buying a helmet from a European manufacturer and they don't really have a market for their helmets in North America so they didn't bother getting DOT approval. It is pretty common in Europe thus ECE 22/05 approved... which isn't recognized in Alberta for some reason.

    A non approved helmet is not illegal to order, import buy and own, just not legal to use while riding.

    Safety helmet standards
    108
    (1)
    A safety helmet intended for the use of an operator or a
    passenger of a cycle must meet one or more of the standards for
    motor cycle safety helmets
    adopted under subsection (2) in effect
    on the date on which it was manufactured.

    (2)
    The following are adopted and apply to safety helmets in
    accordance with subsection (1):

    (a) CSA Standard CAN3-D230-M85, Protective Headgear in
    Motor Vehicle Applications;
    (b) Standard No. 218; Motorcycle helmets under Part 571.218
    of the
    Code of Federal Regulations
    (United States), Title
    49;
    (c) British Standards Institution Standard BS 6658: 1985,
    Specification for protective he
    lmets for vehicle users;
    (d) Snell Memorial Foundation 2000 Standard For Protective
    Headgear, For Use with Moto
    rcycles and Other Motorized
    Vehicles;
    (e) Snell Memorial Foundation 2005 Standard For Protective
    Headgear, For Use with Moto
    rcycles and Other Motorized
    Vehicles;
    (f) Snell Memorial Foundation 2010 Standard For Protective
    Headgear, For Use with Moto
    rcycles and Other Motorized
    Vehicles;
    (g) United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
    Regulation 22-05, Uniform provisions concerning the
    approval of protective helmets and their visors for drivers
    and passengers of motorcycles and mopeds.

    So basically, it needs to be Snell approved.

    ^Look at part g of your post. UN Economic Commission for Europe Reg 22-05 (ECE 22-05) is exactly what the helmet is approved for.... so it looks like it is approved in Alberta then.

    Thats excellent news.

    Recently, I bought a Suomy SR-Sport from Italy since the design I wanted wasn't available in North America. As a result, it does not have the DOT sticker, and I can only assume that the SR-Sport that is sold in Europe is the same as the one here, thus making it DOT compliant. In fact, I don't even believe there is an ECE sticker on the back - it only says that it's ECE rated on the tags. No problems obtaining it though!

    Yeah, I looked a little more into it and for some reason I think it only says ECE on the inside tag. There are a few pics of the ECE stickers on the net but mostly I found pics of tags. They may have done away with stickers as they are too easy to counterfeit.

    Vehicle Equip. Reg - Section 108
    (3) A safety helmet must have the mark or label of the
    organization in subsection (2) indicating that the safety helmet met
    one or more of the specifications required on the date on which it
    was manufactured.

    Regulation doesn't say it needs to be on the exterior... it just has to be somewhere.

    Nevertheless, I ordered the helmet and it shipped yesterday from Palermo Italy. Fuck am I excited to get it!

    Also, I ordered another helmet from England last Friday. They used FedEx and wow am I impressed! Shipped Friday and they delivered this morning!

    ^ It should have a "E3" tag sewn to the chinstrap if it's from Italy.

    Oh, and best of luck with shipping! I dealt with a shop that I had actually been to in person when I was in Firenze, so I took a chance with them again despite all the horror stories about the Italian postal service. It took a few weeks to get to my door, but I received everything in good order (I purchased some Dainese pants+jacket+boots at the same time).

    The thought crossed my mind. The one from the UK is a matte black Shark Raw.

    The one from Italy, I think I want to keep secret. Lol. It's pretty unique and rare for this part of the world. I might be the only one that has one in Alberta. I just want to enjoy the rarity of it for a bit.

    Both helmets are made in France though. Separate companies but both from France.
