Default Dude busted for odo rollback on 54 cars

A Calgary man has been charged with fraud after buying vehicles at auctions with high kilometres, then rolling back the odometer.
Calgary police say more than 54 vehicles were sold to unsuspecting buyers. In one case the odometer was rolled back approximately 208,000 kilometres.
A credit card company tipped off police in January that "locally skimmed cards" were being used to service the vehicles and buy parts, launching the investigation.
A 28-year-old Calgary man faces one count of fraud over $5,000.

I laughed at this when I saw it. Guy deserves an award for rolling an odo back 200k and being able to pull it off.

    Calgary Herald has a name:

A Calgary man has been charged in connection with a vehicle odometer rollback scam in which more than 50 people were defrauded.

Police say a credit card company alerted the economic crimes unit in January about skimmed credit cards that had been used to service vehicles and purchase vehicle parts.

Investigators determined that over a three-year period, 54 vehicles had been purchased from an auction house, and their odometers had been rolled back before they were resold online.

In one case, 208,000 kilometres were rolled back.

The total value of fraud is estimated at around $300,000 and it’s believed there are more victims that are yet to be identified, say police.

Andriy Plysiun, 28, of Calgary, was charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

1 count of fraud over $5K? Seems pretty light for 54 vehicles unless he was just selling these cars for $92 over the purchase price.

Pics of the car that had the 200k km roll back.

This leads to the question of how hard is this to do? I was searching Kijiji in Ontario and it came up with this ad for this device that will apparently do VW's etc. Check out the youtube link in the ad and its a Russian website:

    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-other-auto-pa...ationFlag=true

Seems kind of simple to do on an electronic odometer but do they all have a tamper LED that illuminates if some one tampers with it? How about coding a replacement cluster etc or swapping one in with lower mileage?

I see a ton of old BMW's coming from Japan that are in shit condition with less than 100,000km on them. The mileage does not suit the condition and I always suspect the analogue ODO has been rolled back and or tampered with. There are even JDM importers in BC providing mileage verification reports lol as if they are worth anything

Digital odometers are ridiculously easy to roll back with the proper equipment. The equipment is available to anyone.

I think for the majority of JDM stuff, it's that it sits in an outdoor lot for 5-10 years in the elements, you can almost always tell this from the tires, sports tires with lots of tread left but weathered and cracked.

My brother's Levin had about 70k kms on it when he got it and it looked like it was used in a space shuttle re-entry with all the clearcoat peeling on the front and weathered paint, dash was sun cracked and everything.

+1 would love to know what the car looked like. I have seen a few vehicles that it would be doable on. There was a 2009 Acura RL with 400K on it. The car was in great shape for 400K but probably average shape for 200K.

I had a F350 with over 325000km and I could have easily sold it as a truck with 50000km, it had no scratches, dents or rust at all and the interior actually showed like it was new. After I replaced the exhaust, headers, put a lift on, new lights all around, rims, tires, windshield, coated the undercarriage, etc. there were very little signs of it having the km it actually did.

Sold my 2012 ram with 260000km that was in the same shape.

Now my 2014 just rolled over 50000km and I could roll it back to 3000km and no one would know.

It all depends on how anal the owner is.

Doesn't matter how a car looks if it has higher mileage....it's still got wear and tear on many other things......ball joints, seals, steering rack, suspension components, transmission ect. That's why cars have odometers in the first place
