Default Beyond CSI Needed in fatal Hit and Run on QE2.

    Hi Everyone,

A close family friend of ours died on Monday in an early morning accident 20km south of Leduc, his Honda Civic ran into something (most likely a semi trailer) and he died in hospital shortly after. The driver of whatever he hit fled the scene, and everyone would like to just make sense of the matter, why did the accident happen? How did he hit it? It seems strange to just run into something on the highway. Please help if you have any information please respond on here or to their parents in the kijiji ad or Police.

    Thank you beyond.

RIP. If it was a slow fully loaded semi, the driver wouldn't of even felt the collision and if it was square in the middle the driver wouldn't see it especially if it was dark. Otherwise there would be no reason why the semi would leave unless he was drunk or high. Odd yes, but there is a good chance the driver didn't notice and is long gone now. Hopefully if there is damage to the semi the driver will report it and things will come together.

    RIP to the victim.

Especially if he was pulling two trailers...but you would think they would notice the damage once they are at their delivery and do some inquiries.

The trucking company may very well have already made an inquiry from their end - it's been what, a bit more 2 days since the accident. Just don't expect such an inquiry to hit the news - police have to do their work to determine if said trucking company may or may have not been involved.

The bars at the back are pretty sturdy, takes a lot to bend them beyond what would appear as normal wear and tear. Hitting a loaded B-Train with a Civic would probably feel like a pothole. If he hit a lowboy or a tilt deck, there would probably be no damage at all.

This is what a teacher told us in airbrake school which was exactly that - he had no idea there was a car wedged behind until he got out for a washroom break, hopefully the other vehicle didn't actually just drive away though, sorry for your loss OP

I wonder if a rear mounted impact sensor has already been invented for semi trailers that could notify the driver of a rear impact?

Maybe a chance for someone to make a boat load of money and prevent semi drivers from unknowingly driving away from a collision.

I am also unsure why the parents are so dead set on finding the truck...

I am not trying to be a dick here or anything, but by finding the truck is going to accomplish what? Either the truck was stopped, or buddy was going at breakneck speed.

Is finding the truck going to bring closure or something? In reading the Kijiji post and the OP it sounds like they want to crucify the truck driver for something.

Like I said, I know I am coming off as a dick here, and I don't mean to, I am just trying to figure out why the special interest?

There is only two reasons in my head as to why the family would be looking.

One would be that they want closure and want to know that their kid didn't do anything wrong. Peace of mind is a big thing for people.

The second reason is they have a lawyer who wants to sue the big truck company for damages etc. Can't do that unless you know who the truck was.

My guess.... and this is only a guess based on what I am seeing: I am willing to bet that there was a medical condition that was known or unknown that caused it. Be it a seizure, a heart attack, a hypoglycemic episode - what have you. The condition caused him to lose consciousness and his foot stuck to the gas pedal. Again, just a guess.

    My condolences to the family.

The family just wants closure. It's so strange given the cicumstances:

He was on his way to work and regularly drove that stretch. No medical conditions or anything like that which is what makes it even weirder. He was only 29. The speedo was stuck/stopped at 116 after the crash, and there were no skid marks or anything like that.

So it just seems odd, could be farm equipment or something too, driver may have been high and drunk or missed weigh stations or who knows and didn't want to stop.

    I also know the family.

My guess is falling asleep at the wheel with the cruise on. A friend lost his brother that way, long boring highway with curves, just drove straight off an embankment no brake marks or anything.

Texting, cruising, sleeping, etc. ... all possible causes. The thread title is completely wrong as it makes it look like someone else caused it and took off.

    From the Kijiji ad.
There are multiple witnesses of 2 large RED tractor trailer units pulling SPECIALIZED, extra wide, extra long trailers. It has also been brought to attention that one of these units was UNESCORTED by a PILOT Car and was poorly if at all lite by tail lights.
If the vehicle did rear end a truck that was carrying an extra wide, extra long and presumably extra heavy load I could also definitely see the driver not even knowing they had been rear ended.

What's wrong with wanting to know all the details and the "why"? Closure means something.

It's been five years since my friend was murdered and it's still unsolved. Maybe I'm just self absorbed but I will feel better about the whole thing if/when the answers come, even if I'm 90 years old when it happens. Of course they want answers, sometimes you need them for no reason other than you need them.

I think you really meant they want to know it was all their kids fault and no one else's. Even if the tractor trailer carrying a wide load was "dimly lit" as witnesses claim, it's just not possible to hit it if your car was functioning normally (i.e. working headlights). Unless of course said driver was, as others pointed out, asleep.

Also Oct 6 was a full moon lit night, so unless it was super cloudy, it would've actually been reasonably bright out.

And an overwide trailer on a public road WOULD be escorted and WOULD be very well lit. Regardless if it was moving or not.

The kijiji ad is written in a very accusatory manner by someone who sounds very angry and isn't ready to accept that it was likely his own sons fault. He's already laying blame right in the ad.

I wonder if they've checked the kids phone to see what kind of usage it was getting before it happened.

    RIP to him though.
