    Default CT4WD Shut Down!?

I don't really get it... one of the most popular local 4x4 sites with dedicated members and a responsible outlook on trail use. Half the Toyota's in the city are stickered up, practically a name brand locally... has been frozen and essentially shut down

I've honestly considered buying a Toyota just because of the club alone, I've met countless people through the club, even introduced other Toyota owners to it. Even as a brand outsider I'd always felt welcome by the members there.

    http://www.ct4wd.com/forum/showthrea...610#post112610

The final post made by Nathan:

    The End of CT4WD
I have come to the decision to close the Association down. After seeing some amazing things come from and through the Association, meeting excellent people, training a good handful of trail users, and creating my new career path, it has come to a point where it is best to stop then to fade.

I had a very shiny perspective of people and what can be had. From the flood a year ago, I’ve seen the worst… Ego’s that have grown, divisive comments, string the pot, entities looking out for their own interests and the passion no longer in the eyes of the team and myself. Perhaps I’m not strong enough to bear through the BS… it only was a few that killed it… but those few killed it for a large number of us. When the passion is dead it is time to stop.

I still have a passion for teaching, learning and taking people to see incredible places. This will always be alive. I invite those of you who are genuinely stoked on being out there to remain with me at The Gear Shop where I will continue to teach, run trail runs and keep the stoke. We won’t be doing it for that epic photo for social media, for the ability to race a trail or discriminate being on a trail with certain drivers… It will be for those who want to be apart of a small group that wish to keep pushing their limits, learning, staying humble, and do it for the love not the like.

CT4WD will keep it’s site running to remind us what we had. The forum will be frozen but information will still be able to be read. All events, trail runs, education will seize. For those with Membership, the dealerships that support CT4WD will continue to work till your Membership expires. Paid members will be taken care of through The Gear Shop for the time being regarding courses and runs.

As I look back I am very thankful for the experience, the friends, the memories and seeing people do something that made them smile ear to ear. A huge thank you to my family and friends for putting up with this wild idea and being patient as I worked through the night almost every night on the Association. Thank you to the CORE Team and to the CT4WD Team for your volunteer hours helping the community experience an incredible time.

    Thank you,

    Nathan Hayashi

I see this as a major blow for local 4x4ing, even if there was some internal drama, as a whole they were a strong voice in the community and literally one of the good guys in terms of safety and public perception. For the entire 4x4 community, were definitely better with them, than without.

^^ Ouch, that really sucks. Hopefully they refund you for it.

If you paid for it via Visa\MC you might be able to get your money back that way if you are not over the 30 days.

I wonder where all the Toyota's will go now?

Wow that's pretty crazy. While never owning a Toyota they've always been a great group to tag along in a Jeep for a run and the community as a whole seemed really solid. It's a shame it's fallen apart.

I have seen this time and time again when a forum starts getting to large. Its easier to just say fuck it and walk away then deal with all the crap properly and clean it up.

With that said yes it sucks I don't think there is enough of a community regarding off road groups in general and one less just makes it hurt everyone in th eend.

I don't think I have even been on the site.

From the sounds of it there was a lot of drama between some of the members... kind of an OG vs Newbs thing. Lots of criticism about how they run the club that ranged from questionable financials of the club and gear shop, to rules being used to discriminate, to secret events that just the OG's would go on despite others paying in full for memberships.

I don't really know how much is truth or rumor, but seems it was a growing issue and Nathan finally just walked away.

I think shutting down the site is a bit of a knee jerk reaction personally, there was a huge number of people using it, most had no idea about these issues.

Talk to Nathan at the Gear Shop. He explicitly said he would take care of people who had bought memberships for the year. He's waiting to get a new phone system installed and is currently down to only one line, so try to go in or if you can't make it there easily email [email protected].

    A couple of things...

CT4WD was a business, not a club. There were never any questionable financials, but some people had a hard on for "seeing the books". If you read all the posts in that thread it's pretty clear that Nathan was never lining his pockets with money running the association.

There were never any "secret events". Some of the guys who were part of the team - trail leaders, PATHS team, etc. - were also friends who hung out (well, they still do hang out) together. That includes stuff like going out together for dinner, grabbing some beers, and even camping or wheeling together. After one of those camping trips, pictures were posted on the forum and someone got all butthurt that they weren't invited or that an unofficial run post wasn't made. Oddly enough the same people complaining also went on "secret runs" where they didn't invite anyone else and posted pictures of the trips on the forum.

I never felt there was an OG vs Newb vibe. There were some people who did nothing other than criticize everything that CT4WD - and Nathan specifically - did. Some of us got tired of those people. I don't know if I'm an "OG" since I only joined a few years ago, but I made a lot of friends through CT4WD. Some of those friends were members before me, and some of them signed up in the last year.

As far as I'm concerned anything other than what was in Nathan's final post is rumour, speculation, and conjecture (even my post here). I'll bet some of the stuff you heard came from some of the people who were part of the reason Nathan shut it down. If you want the real reasons, read all the posts Nathan made in that final thread or talk to him in person.

Too bad, the Calgary 4x4 community is disorganized as it is. There's enough yotas though that something else will replace it. Us Nissan use a sub forum on thenewx.org, they may have to do something similar.

Just to be clear, I was not insinuated any of those... they are just rumors I've heard from people in passing, and I was speculating that some of those types of things are why he shut it down.

I also totally agree with you on the OG vs Newb topic, I've always felt it was very welcoming and open to new members, even moreso than other clubs.

I'd say 90% of the people I know who are involved with CT4WD are not aware of any of these things were happening and this came as a total shock to them. Even for me, I'd heard things once in a while (like you do about every club from time to time)... I never thought they were serious issues that could have led to this.

I've heard this stated a few times as well, I am curious why the distinction is being highlighted?

    EDIT: Answered my own question
The difference between CT4WD and most clubs is it was registered as a business so it would be able to carry any type of cash year to year with the ability to use the funds to help with projects and have great events to give back to it’s Members.

Could probably open up a CT4WD section here, if for no other reason than giving people a place to plan the future. Guaranteed it would be up more quickly than your lame-o Fiesta club.

Why do you guys hate my Fiesta Club so much

Calgary is almost in need of a non-brand specific club. So many people jump from Jeeps, to Hummer, to Land Rover, to Toyota, to Nissan... and everything in between. Really, once you have been around for like 10+ years you start caring more about the people who are driving the 4x4's than what ever brand it happens to be.

100% absolutely agree! The whole split of brands is just.. weird.

Its like any other hobby and passion and having everyone under one roof would be nice.

Which is precisely why I'll hate any car you drive, regardless of make.

The Beyond runs are kind of fun because you get a pretty diverse mix actually.

Might be one of those in the works...
