Default Data usage while travelling. Roaming off. Cell Data off. Still uses data. iPhone 6+

I posted this on HoFo as well, but I thought I would ask here too:

I was in Florida in June and Hawaii yesterday.

Florida was iPhone 5, Hawaii was iPhone 6+ (restored with iPhone 5 backup).

I kept getting texts from Fido saying I was using data even though Roaming was off and Cell data was off. I reset my stats and it kept saying 0 bytes used.

I contacted apple and they had me turn off a bunch of other settings but to no avail as I got the same text the next day.

Now, I don't care about a couple of KB of data being charged to my account, but the daily fee is $7.99 for data I will never use.

Anyone else know what might be using cell data even though everything is off? The only way I can stop this is if I leave my phone on Airplane mode. That prevents texts and calls. I have a T-mobile hotspot that I use for data while in the US.

I was asked if I use exchange, and I do not. I however have a hotmail account. When I got back to Canada, I noticed that the phone did use some exchange data.

    Any ideas?

Text messages aren't data. They are sent and billed differently (over voice standards which still aren't digital in many cases if i am correct). That one is free as well so i wouldn't worry.

edit: feel free to correct me on them using a different network btw, that was just my interpretation of how it worked.

I am getting a text from Fido saying I am using roaming data. I am not using data. The phone is using data in the background even though I have turned everything off.

This is different from the vanilla text you get whenever you roam onto a different network encouraging you to get a data roaming pack?

The only thing I can think about it 6 and 6 plus are VOLTE capable.
As far as I know in Canada no carrier is VOLTE and I am not sure about US. Depending on how the records are cut from the roaming carrier they may calssify this as data.

Sounds like a bug to me but my phone has never done that on Telus. I go down to AZ and leave my work phone on with data off regularly in case i need to be contacted...

All my trips before June, never had a problem. Didn't even turn off Cell data. Something is fucked.

I might restore and manually re-install apps.

Maybe iOS 8.1 has a fix?

regular text messages get rated differently than data usage. However, MMS (pic/vid/long tests) use data, and that might be where the charge is coming from.

However, what I would suggest is going a hard boot of the phone, and then powering on. Even though you turn a setting off, the apps may not get that message.

Hotmail also can use exchange email, but again, with data turned off, it SHOULDN'T use data.

My bet is if you reboot the phone, you will stop these issues

the stuff from fido is actual SMS not imessage. The issue is that the phone is sending Data blips when data is disabled.

Probably apple tracking you to sell you better restaurant recommendations or something...

He's using a mobile wifi hotspot for data. All his apps, including imessage, should be using data through wifi. Something is broken and using cellular data.

iMessage doesn't even work if he has no wifi. Just sends everything as SMS.

This has nothing to do with SMS, texts, iMessage, etc.

I have turned everything off and the phone uses data just sitting there.

There was an iOS bug back when I was using my iphone4 where push services would use data because the wifi radios would be shutoff while phone was being charged overnight (standby mode power conservation).

    Wonder if it is related?

I have a one on one call with a Genius tomorrow. haha, let's see what comes of it.

I hate having to call Fido as they fight me on it every time. I got credit back for Florida for 2 days.

I called them while in Hawaii but have to wait for my bill to get credit again this time. I think I will be charged for 5 days. It's really annoying.
