Default Are things worse in Japan than we think?

I've heard from friends living in Korea that no one is travelling to Japan because of how bad the radiation is. I've heard that all parts of the country are affected and that even short trips aren't recommended. If any of this is true then Japan is doing a good job at keeping things quiet.

I recently came across this article talking about how Tokyo is straight up contaminated.

    Thoughts?

Radiation isn't exactly difficult to measure. If it were that widespread I think more people would have brought it up.

Not sure why the government would cover it up?

Exactly. You are probably going to Osborn more radiation on the round trip flight from clagary to Tokyo than what you would absorb while you are there even if there is contamination.

Chernobyl is barely dangerous now aside from the reactor site... Everyone was so paranoid when that happened hat everyone on the planet was going to die.

The problem is even many well educated people don't understand the fundamentals of radiation which leads to fear mongering in a disproportionate amount of the population to many other issues.

We're currently vacationing in Tokyo; also covered Osaka, Kyoto, Seoul and Beijing on the same trip.

Everything here seems as normal now as our previous 4 visits...pre and post tsunami.

If anything, we have definitely noticed many more tourists this time around. In fact, just this past weekend, hotels in Tokyo had a 4% vacancy rate according to Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline etc. Travelers were being strongly advised to attempt to reschedule their vacation days to the weekdays as hotels were filling up and peoples' reservations (including ours) were being cancelled.

Happy travels, Japan is by far our most favorite country we have visited to date!

Your friend in Korea just hates Japan and Japanese and just won't let go of the past, that most likely had nothing to do with her generation at all. That's my assumption. My ex was Korean and wouldn't shut up about her thoughts on Japan. I think it's an inferiority complex or something.

I love Japan and been there twice since the tsunami, and actually went to Ishinomaki (train goes through the Fukushima prefecture). Everything there is normal and nothing to worry about. My last trip there was just this March. All the pictures below are from this 2014 march trip.

    Next stop, Fukushima..

    Ate noodles at this place:

And how it looked like before the tsunami

All that's left of this neighborhood

Here it Tokyo at end of March/beginning of April this year

    Here it rural Kobe

And here are my in-laws neighbors....

There are definitely lots of opinions on the effects of the radiation and whether or not it is now safe.

We (wife, 3 year old son, and yet to be confirmed at the time child in wife) did a 5 day trip to Hokkaido during the Snow Fest in February 2014.

Before the trip, we were forwarded tons of video footage of the mutated life forms (fish, plants, etc) appearing in Japan and saying how bad everything is.

I was tiny bit hesitant about our trip. I'm sure there will be some exposure to radiation. It is hard to say what will be the long term effects of our short term radiation exposure. But at least I'm happy to report that our son was born healthy with everything in tact. Everything looked normal so far (23 days old). Being Chinese, my wife was warned to avoid various kinds of food during pregnancy. She did that for our first born but mostly disregard the suggested diet "rules" for our second. She even ate a lot of delicious (but radiated) sashimi. So far, our second has less issues such as jaundice.

The VICE Documentary on this is excellent, I recommend watching the whole thing. While impossible to capture the whole story, they made some interesting discoveries, such as measuring radiation 10X higher than what the government funded Geiger counters measured only a couple feet away. They focused on the Fukushima area though, not so much areas like Tokyo.

I've read 90% of the food is contaminated in Japan. I'm not sure how this is verified but I would imagine that the ground water must be taking a beating.

Id be headed north to do some skiing, I'm sure all is ok but the more I read, the more I learn that the Japanese government is hiding a lot.
