I had hoped electricity prices would come down but after this cold snap it seems even further away now. The 30 day average price was down to 5.1 cents / kwh just over a week ago and now it's 13.8 cents / kwh again. So I'm sure that'll mean the RRO price goes up again for Feb.

Excited for new electric generation to come on before I renew....
After they come online though, my bet is they start rotating planned maintenance for the rest, which will go offline (or reduced production) and prices stay high.

I keep an eye on energyrates.ca to see where the enmax prices are and if I need to switch. I wish someone would create a site that would just alert you on a rate change from that data so I don't always have to look.

Moving my nat gas to variable. Doubtful I'm eating a massive spike at this point. 30 days notice.
$4.09/GJ fixed vs $2.50/GJ+$1.23 transaction fee.
Not really sure how the transaction fee isn't on fixed too?!

    electricity.
    I'm at 6.69¢/kWh.
    Renewed fixed is 12.29
Floating is over 16¢ / kWh.
If those new plants are coming online soon, wait this out seems to be the brained up move.

So $3.73 vs $4.09? Pretty subtle difference. Hmmmm, I'm in the same boat though,

I am on 4.09 fixed as well for gas. I was thinking at this point if that $0.36 is worth it. I wish I was benyl who had the guts way way earlier.

Switching to variable would depend on your billing cycle. We won't see our January usage till February and with the cold snap and people trying to stay warm I'm curious what the rate will be for January.

If you're techy I'd bet you could build a python script to do exactly that. Or hire someone on fiverr etc to set it up for you, if its just an API or cookie or simple webform you would just set it up to scrape the website daily or weekly and email the prices to you.

You could probably just use the Distill chrome extension to monitor it for you as well. People use that to monitor price changes and stock changes on websites.

    Kind of interesting read:
Canada's power grids increasingly at risk from winter storms, heat waves | CBC News

Mostly this tid bit as it seems the more frequent grid alerts are relatively new thing.

No blackouts were required, with the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) noting electricity consumption dropped significantly within minutes of the alert being issued.

But the operator's data shows grid alerts in Alberta during both heat waves and cold snaps are increasing in frequency.

The electric system operator issued just four provincial grid alerts in the four-year period between 2017 and 2020, but has issued an additional 17 since 2021.

I'm curious how much of this is due to the influx of people to Alberta in the last few years with the power grid not able to sustain the demands needed with the weather we have had lately.

We’re one of the - if not THE - fastest growing jurisdictions in the world. Like 4% growth y/y.

    That’s nuts.

It gives them a taste of their homeland so it's easier to make the adjustment to Canada.
