While Nenshi got a lot of money from developers, Bill Smith got way more.
Just like Smith was going to give the Flames a new Arena and Nenshi wasn't. Oh wait.

(For those unaware, Smith wasn't keen on a new Arena, and didn't get more money from developers)

He sure didn't present himself or his campaign that way. Everyone accused him of being bought by CESC, and he couldn't be bothered to deny it.

And now he's working for a group trying to replace McMahon stadium with taxpayers money.

Pretty easy to see. Smith has even more developer money before you even get into the double dippers like the Wenzel's.

Don't see CESC on Bill Smith's donor list. Unless they are under another name or a numbered company or something.

I agree with Sheltons position about building the area during THIS TIME (when we should be practicing austerity) - however I wonder if part of the reason now is that the cost to build (labour) is a lot less than it would have been during the boom times?

Poorly run from the start. It's a good lesson in throwing away an election because your advisors tell you to not take sides and just coast along.

He's wanted a new fieldhouse for the stamps since before the election. That would have been his goal, not an arena for the flames. Just funny that nenshi himself was angling it that Smith and Chabot would be giving money to the flames, when he fought for it all along. Much better politician, he is.

For the curious, Smith got more money from every type of business. Marketing. Car dealerships. Finance. Energy. Etc. A good message was sent that Calgary businesses didnt feel like Calgary was open for business.

Well, every business but developers, presumably.

More details have been released about the new arena, along with a fancy new infographic.

Not that graphic but I've used a designer on fiverr before for similar things. Cost was cheap as fuck, like 10-20$ to make. Though if it's sensitive company info you might have to consider that

100% owned by a city (presented as a good thing when it's not) but only gets $2.5M for the naming rights of the building they own.

    Brilliant.

    Brilliant.
Do you think that they could sell naming rights with no NHL team?

    Yes.

    Sprint Center
    Centre Videotron
    FirstOntario Centre
    MTS Centre up until 2011
    Rogers Place

All major sport sized arenas without an NHL team (or major tenant) that got a naming rights deal.

FirstOntario Centre's naming rights deal is $3.5M over 10 years, and that arena is 35 years old.

Quebecor is the operator of the Videotron Centre, but still had to pay the naming rights deal on top of that to Quebec City ($1M/year without an NHL team, $2M/year with one).

So it's simply a handout to the team they're disguising as a revenue source of the arena for the city.

LOL at city owning 100% being a good thing.
