Another small update - CMLC has opened a survey inquiring how the new venue will affect you. On top of that, the development process continues and a project team will be selected in the near future. Construction is slated to begin summer 2021.

Is there any talk of integrating that nearby green line station into this plan? It feels like you could have the station right under one end of the arena without much hassle or extra expense, but what do I know?

The Greenline was proposed to originally run along 12th, but has since been switched to run along 11th Ave with an underground station at 4th Street. This would be just North of the new arena, and i imagine they would be incorporating some type of underground walkway to access the station directly from the grounds.

    That would take forethought.

With all the vacant space we should’ve blew up a building and built it in the core like MTS center. +15 access would be phenomenal.

BMO Centre expansion was approved, which was really just a formality at this point. Always has been the most important piece of the puzzle for Victoria Park. But it is also the project that would benefit crossover benefit with a new arena, so we'll see where that goes from here. The CRL question will be the big one, because any CRL extension brings that back into play for an arena as well (or at least for various 'public realm' improvements that could be integrated into the arena project and whatever other funding gymnastics they want to come up with to sell it (CRL builds the "pop-up galleries" that also happen to share a major structural component or something).

Existing structures being demolished would include the Corral?

Corrals been on death row for a decade. Isn’t it formally closed at this point?

Surprised this hasnt been updated yet. Project paused. Additional $70 million

    https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/calgary-f...rces-1.5387513

CALGARY -- Development on the city's new event centre, which is expected to be the new home of the Calgary Flames, has been paused over a discrepancy over the budget for the project, officials have confirmed to CTV News.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), along with its partners with the City of Calgary, provided an update on the progress of the project planning at a closed-door meeting of council on April 13.

At that meeting, the CMLC said "there is a difference in the current budget estimate and the program requirements for the facility."

"The decision to take this pause is the responsible and prudent approach to ensure we find the best solutions to move the project forward successfully, without incurring any additional costs on the project while these discussions progress. The team is working collaboratively to find a suitable path forward," said Kate Thompson, president and CEO of the CMLC, in a statement.

CSEC won't provide any further statement beyond what the CMLC said regarding the project.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says the situation involving the arena deal is not unique and it's better that it unfolded this way right now rather than at a later date.

"(It's) far better to have these issues sorted out at this stage than to have unexpected cost overruns after construction has begun."

calgary, new arena, entertainment, calgary flames, The deal for Calgary's new event centre was signed back in December 2019, with $550-million price tag split 50/50 between the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation and the City of Calgary.

The land and building will be owned by the city and the Flames’ ownership group will cover the operation and maintenance costs for 35 years.

The city will get two per cent of the ticket revenue and $250,000 per year for the first 10 years for the naming rights. Once the arena is completed and turned over to CSEC, it will pay taxes to the city, though the exact amount is redacted in the public agreements.

CMLC will get $8 million to work as the project manager for the planning and building stages of the rink.

All cost overruns when building the area would be covered through a contingency fund or by scaling back the project. However, if more funding was needed when both of those options had been exhausted, the Flames and the City agreed to split the costs.

Construction of the arena is expected to begin sometime this year.

As long as this isn't warming us up to some other bullshit news down the road, I would say it's a non-event. Project is still going through and they're just taking a small break for a month to make sure costs are in order.

If they end up delaying it further or shelving it, then that will be a big red flag.

I'd have to assume the costs went up due to skyrocketing materials prices, but someone could have mucked up the original estimate too.

you're telling me. Fucking 300%+ price increase on a 2x4 stud is insane. Used to buy them for like 1$2.75 each a year ago, now they are up around $8
