They'd lose more money moving than they would by just building an arena themselves. It's just posturing, they're not going anywhere

The Flames will win the Stanley Cup this year and this discussion will be laid to rest.

Why this has to be so far removed from a normal business decision is mind boggling to me.

Via Rail, Calgary Parking Authority, Alberta Treasury Branches, BC Hydro - if one does some digging it becomes quite apparent that government is business.
    Will fuck off, again.

I want a new arena as much as anyone else, but IMO CoC needs to stand firm and not cave in.

I think the threat around moving is a bluff. Where the hell are they going to move to? Another warm US city with no hockey fans? Fact is Calgary is one of the best markets for a hockey team and it would be dumb to move. They would be better off staying here and continue using the saddledome than move.

I want to to just get a deal done on the new arena already. That week or Garth Brooks concerts brought $42 million of economic impact into Edmonton alone. This is bigger than just a place for the flames to play. If Calgary wants to be a world class city we need world class facilities.

the problem is there is a nasty precedent with public money going to fund these projects.

If you look at what kind of development a new arena can generate for a city we need to look no further then a couple hours up the road. Everyone get fixated on the public money aspect and while i agree it sucks a little bit if you look at all the extra money coming into the city of Edmonton now because of it, it makes this an easier pill to swallow.

The economic studies are quite clear: pro sports stadiums do not bring economic growth to a city.

After being in the coilers new barn im ready to sign on any dotted line for my tax dollars to be put towards a new rink. Love the dome for its heritage but the place is a fucking dump compared to any new facility!

I have never really looked into the economic growth studies but everyone seems to echo the same sentiment. I just dont understand how regular people who attend flames games and concerts and other events wouldnt be for this. Maybe the vast majority never ever goes to the dome, in which case I can see people not wanting to put money towards it.

$42 million of economic impact? That would mean revenue. Let's say that equated to 10% net on that, so the area brought in a net profit of $4.2mil. For the city of Edmonton, that would be 1/10th of a percent of GDP for the year (rough guesstimate based on wiki numbers).

Based on a City of Calgary report released on April 19, 2016, it was estimated that CalgaryNEXT would cost about $1.8 billion with taxpayers paying up to two-thirds of the total.
So taxpayers would be on the hook for $1.2bil. Assuming Garth Brooks level of revenue (unlikely, he is probably the best case example) every week would equate to only $215mil. At that rate, it would take basically 6 years to just have paid off the debt, and that is assuming that total $4.2mil went back to the city which it DOESN'T.

What you are asking for is basically subsidized private business welfare that takes money from everyone's pocket (the taxpayer) and redistributes it into privately owned business pocket (Calgary Flames owners and the area surrounding the proposed new arena).

This is why publicly funded arenas are such AWFUL ideas. Because the economics have never, EVER, made sense anywhere. It essentially gets everyone to pay for some people's entertaining, which is just fucking incredibly stupid

What you don't realize or don't care to recognize is that many studies have been done on this. People have a finite amount of money to spend on entertainment in a given year. It's not like people are like "man, I guess I'm not going to do anything since no concerts came to town this year". All that happens is money is redirected to different areas of the economy.

If Calgary gets an arena, there isn't more revenue created, its just allocated in a different manner (ie split with the revenue Edmonton would generate).

Also, downtown Edmonton is f*&king crazy now. I hate going down there except maybe for a date. For the yuppy wannabes its great though.
