Default 2014-15 SASC Winter Driver Training

These sessions will be taking place again this coming winter season......

The first one we wish to gear toward college-university, and young people in general - Sunday, Dec.28, 2014.

So if you know anyone .....

More info on the "new" SASC home page/forum:

    http://forums.sascsolo.com/index.php

They are not open to registration yet but will be in a while.

This year we hope to separate out some of the corporate clients and open up more spots to the general public.

Will you be using Karelo for the registration process again as well?

Very much looking forward to attending another session this winter!

The FAQ on that forum isnt finished. Can you answer these:

    Who are the instructors?
Do I have insurance while participating in the school?
What does it cost and how to I register?
What do I need to bring?

What kind of car is appropriate for this course?

Any car is appropriate. Seriously. Bring what you want to learn how to drive on ice. If you don't care about learning anything, bring what you want to hoon in.

Just make sure you've got good tires or you're not going to have any fun.

Fair enough you think ContiWintercontact TS830P's will be suitable?

I would love the chance to take the 235 out and learn to properly control it. I have the LSD in to which should help.

Cost is key though cause i would like to get a buddy of mine to come out to!

    More fun with friends

Those tires should be just fine, especially if we get a bit of snow on the lake (you'd be surprised at how much more grippy it gets). If its just plain ice there's gonna be a fair bit more slippage/wheel spin but its still doable.

Nice thing about BMWs is that you can completely kill the DSC which really helps.

No idea of what the cost will be this year but all I know is that you need to sign up asap once the registration opens up. Fills up really quick. The events are usually sold out every year.

It's an excellent place to learn the limitations for all-season tires, that's for sure.

This is one of the best driving schools in Alberta, and IMO, should be on every drivers to-do list.

+1 for driving school experience. It will be mandatory for my kids when they start to drive....

Irrespective of vehicle and tires; it's a good exposure to learning what ones' vehicle is capable of, how it will behave and just as importantly, how you (the driver) will behave.

Can't wait to go again this year!

Not just the limitations of all-seasons, but how hard your winters can fall off without decent tread. We were tempted to swap my fronts and rears just to get a little bit extra tread up front and help turn-in, cause I was under-steering everywhere.

Agreed, no matter your tires (well, maybe excluding the guy with the 911 turbo that tried it with performance summers) it's a great learning experience and a ton of fun.

That's a driver problem not a tire problem.

We just got the forum up yesterday and are continually adding info there so please check back there.

The instructors are local (some from Red Deer and even Edmonton have come out to help out) racers mostly from the CSCC and SASC clubs. There are past national Rally champions, road racers, some motorcycle guys, and autocrossers (auto slalom) with championships from US and Canada .... National-level instructors. Guarantee you will learn something no matter where your driving is at!

We are just finalizing the fees but expect that they will be cheaper than last year by a significant amount and also with a discount for students (must show valid student ID at registration). We are, after all, not in this to make money as a club but rather the priority is to get some of the information/driving skill we have learned on the track to the general public. This is a public service first and foremost. Maybe, just maybe, we can improve some people's driving skills not just on ice/snow but just in general. Heck, maybe some of you want to join us for some summer events too ... but, like I said, that is not the emphasis per se.

That is also why you do not need any special vehicle - run what ya brung. Probably what you drive daily is best. Winter and/or studded tires would be best due to the extreme conditions we usually run on (think skating rink) ... All-seasons or summers are frustrating and a problem at best .... never mind trying to get up the boat ramp at the end of the day! It may not be pretty.

Also, remember that whatever skills we teach you, are transferrable to any vehicle you drive! Unlike car mods which you usually cannot easily (or impossible) transfer from vehicle to vehicle, your driving skills do transfer! If you have ever wondered why a hi-perf driving school is better than any mods you do to your vehicle .... This is one key reason. You keep the learning!

    Anyway, I am digressing.

Keep checking back at the SASC forum for info .... it is coming.

There are some tentative dates there .... probably 95% sure right now but they have not been set up on Karelo or Motosportsreg yet. That is when they will be official.

    Thanks,

    Reijo
