Default Where to get a good band saw or scroll saw?

Reviews for the mastercraft and ryobi units from homedepot and canadian tire are crap. Anyone have a different brand/store they could recommend? Mainly hobby use.

Word. Delta or Rockwell from the 80s is better than what one can reasonably buy retail.

If you're set on buying new, check out CanadianWoodworker across from Memory Express south.

I have one of the cheap ryobi ones. I abuse the shit out of it. If it breaks I'll buy a new one. On year 3 right now so I definitely got my money's worth.

My brother-in-law has a 15- or 20-year old Sears Craftsman and he uses it quite regularly for hobby wood projects and has not had any problems with it.

Not sure the brand new Craftsman are built as well, but keep your eyes open for a good used one on Kijiji or at a garage sale.

In before ExtraSlow recommends Lee Valley.

But seriously, you could try them.

I actually don't think they sell these, although that would have been my go-to choice.

Busy Bee tools? I'm a bit out of touch with woodworking these days.

Don't think they do. Lee valley is good for tools, and accessories, but not the machinery itself.

    Band saw or scroll saw?

These are 2 completely different pieces of equipment, meant for 2 totally different things...

What is the intended usage, because that determines what kind of saw you need, and might change the recommendation.

Using a scroll saw to do rough dimensional cuts is going to suck, and you are going to be hampered by size. While using a band saw, even a small one, to do the intricate work of a scroll saw is going to be like asking a brain surgeon to operate while wearing 2 pairs of oven mitts...

http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DQJPBOC/r...I1N62QPF07R915 would probably be my choice for a entry-level 14" band saw.

Actually spikerS, I bet they still make a profit overall on shipping. We order a lot of product from a tile company and they changed, a year or two ago, to $80.00 delivery. One box of tile, one truckload of tile, no difference. One flat rate every time.

I asked my rep how that worked out after a year, he said it's a success and they'll continue the program as it all balances out.

There was an almost identical model with free shipping for $600 - I went back to buy it and the price had gone up to $1300.

If this is for small jewelery work, why don't you just get a good quality fret saw? Hand work is fun and allows for some amazing detail work, but at the same time you can cut pretty fast when you want to. I use one to hand cut dovetails in wood up to 4/4 thick without issue...
