It was $3400 a month at Chinook for a kiosk in 2011 (busy season leading to Christmas).

As of last weekend, there is a vacant kiosk at Cross Iron adjacent to the food court. Maybe you could get a deal so it isn't sitting empty.

But realistically, how many man-children are you going to find to offset rental costs It's a pretty niche idea.

Stick to the suggestions of the flea markets, or try out the farmers market. Find a way to get the word out and test the waters.

    Mar...

What about instead of a mall location. Your business is perfect to transform an old Snap-on, food truck, clear window cube advertising truck. And do a rolling store.

Or just import one of these Japanese custom trucks.

That would be Comikaze. It's in a strip mall on McLeod beside Salt & Pepper now. No such store in Crossiron. Maybe you're thinking of Forever Toys, which doesn't sell comics or collectibles?
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

and this is why malls are so boring now. I remember places like Mar is talking about all over malls in the 80s and 90s. Collectible stores, comics, coins, antiques etc. Rent in malls was dirt cheap and you had a lot of variety. I'd love to see Mar's store in Chinook over another stupid chain clothing store.

Good luck renting at all major malls in Calgary.
A couple years ago I was looking to purchase a small franchise(food court) in one of the major shopping mall and the rent and associated misc fees accounted almost 30% of their gross annual sales. On top of that, another 9% for the franchise fee.

Well.. That's just pure economics. Probably why arcades have disappeared too.

I would think Amazon may be better for niche stuff now than physical mall.

    Fuck Amazon.
I tried to buy a backpack from the American site. I selected ship to Canada on the search criteria. The pack came up. Hell it even said 'Amazon Recommends'.
When it came to selecting my address, it said it cant ship. I was like wtf? I got customer service on the line, they had to transfer me to the USA customer service. They could not help and just said buy it from the Canadian site. I checked and its not available.

I thought Nafta was to make this shite easier?

    Wankers.

Why not start out with a website and web-sales, eliminate 99% of overhead and avoid the possible failure of an expensive lease? Re-evaluate in a few years and think about a physical location if it still makes sense once the idea has proven itself.

One of my friends that came to live with me for a while had been running stores for years that sell these small things imported from china, like $2 belt buckles that sell for $20, and ear gauge plugs that are about 50 cents each and sell for something like $10 or more. He was going to run it and I was going to be the money but it was way too expensive to get the kiosk so we didn't bother. He ended up moving back home again.

That's the really cheap stuff, I'm talking about the stuff you always see people buying for $10-$20 for fashion. Ever see people with those happy face or NES controller metal belt buckles? It's good quality, it's just 5000% markup. The mall is full of the kiosks now.
