Transit Police grabs my friend and pushes him against a wall

My friend is deaf and walked past some transit police when he existed the LRT. Evidently the Bus cops were at the exit checking for passes. As he walked the Transit guy was asking him for his ticket. Of course he didn't stop because he can't hear. So the transit guy runs up behind him, grabs him, and pushes him against a wall.

I am wondering, why transit police can ask you for anything if they have no reason to suspect you didn't pay? What gives them the right to touch a person?

Isn't the situation extremely stupid for a $3 bus fair?

Btw my friend had his pass in a lanyard hanging from his neck.

I think my friend should press charges, but he says people grab him all the time, and it is part of being deaf.

Grabbing someone and putting them against a wall vs. slamming a person against a wall are two different things. Hard to say without seeing it, but they do have the right to stop you.

As a deafie, doesn't he pay more visual attention to his surroundings?

Don't know why he'd just walk by them.

That being said, I don't know why the officer couldn't tap him on the shoulder instead of getting all physical.

But I guess that's the new normal in this age of "freedom".

I agree with this. There is no mistake about when they are checking for fare. Chances are with all the usual scum they deal with it was just an honest mistake.
Your friend probably just seemed like the usual scum trying to evade fare, I've seen the folks they deal with and it probably gets old if you deal with them for a career

He was the only person walking by them at the time. To him it just looked like two transit cops standing having a conversation. They didn't say anything until he passed them by.

A person asked want my point is? It is that the police can't even touch you unless they think you have committed a crime. And you don't have to show police anything, unless you are under investigation for a crime, or are driving a vehicle. If the police stop you, you can ask why they are stopping you. You can also say "am I free to be on my way?" And unless they suspect you of something they cannot detain you.

So why can the transit cops stop random people when they have no reason to suspect a person? I would say stop everyone, or no one. And that fares should be asked for on the way in, not on the way out. On the way out seems to be more of a fund raising scam than a need to serve the public.

Seems a little Nazi to me. As if stopping a person for a bus fare violation is the bust of the century.

Because of 9/11 the police forces have been militarized and react to every event as if it is life or death.

Being deaf was mentioned to show that he was in no way being an instigator.

I guess if he was an native, then the cops would have been justified.
