Default Shaganappi pedestrian bridge doesn't quite fit

Not sure if this belongs in the councilors drinking at work or the shaganappi upgrade thread. However it seems that the new bridge doesn't quite fit... lol.

CALGARY – A recently discovered design flaw will delay the opening of the $5.9 million Shaganappi Trail pedestrian bridge.

The City of Calgary had planned to close Shaganappi Trail from January 16th – 18th to move the steel structure into place, but had to cancel their installation because the 58 metre long steel structure doesn’t fit on the pillars meant to support it.

“We don’t know exactly what caused the issue… obviously a design flaw,” said Sean Somers, a spokesperson for the City of Calgary’s transportation department. “We have to go back to find out what went wrong, why it went wrong and ensure this doesn’t happen again going forward.”

This is what happens when you cheap out on a pedestrian bridge.

Should be the contractor's responsibility provided the city negotiated solid contract terms.

I don't know about you, but since when is $6m for a pedestrian bridge cheap?

Since the Peace Bridge was somewhere around $25 million.
A $6m pedestrian bridge belongs in the NE.
Someday we may need to activate the halo structure off Deerfoot and destroy the North East.

No dice. There was a 12-pack included with the deal and the city leaped at it

    Because bridges cost a lot.

On a similar note, unlike some other bridges that used pretentious foreign architects and design firms, this bridge was locally designed.

How do they know it's a design flaw already?

6 million or 25 million, at least the local welders get some extra work out of it.

Slowest bridge construction I have ever seen to begin with

[The city says it won’t pay for any additional costs as a result of the delay while the span’s architects and builders have declined comment. However, they still believes the bridge will open at some point this spring.

They will make sure it doesn't happen again though? Items like these are not ones that are meant to teach a lesson, it should NEVER happen.

It should be noted that the Peace and St. Patrick's Island bridges are both ~twice as long and ~twice as wide as this bridge.

I drive that route everyday and for some reason that bridge always looked a little too small.

I always wondered if they would run into any issues when they try to fit it on like a lego piece. Pretty sure it's not the length that's the issue but if it was, I'd be

Agreed, should never happen past 1st year design class and 1st year civil or structural engineering.

Haha. I could eye ball that and tell you it didn't fit. I was always wondering where the second half of the bridge was located or if it was behind the other arch and I couldn't see it.

Can't believe you're using this to defend the other bridges. So much Nenshisms haha.

Blame the city for choosing shitty architects with high pricetags. For the record, the longer pedestrian bridge over Bow Trail (part of West LRT) was cheaper than this bridge.

At the end of the day, the project will get completed, and the city isn't on the hook, but maybe the city should've done better due diligence on the project.

Not sure what's wrong with a poured concrete structure like the pedestrian bridges over 16th Ave?
It's not like people walking over to Northland Mall from Canadian Tire are thinking, ahh the luxury of this bridge.... If only there was a dedicated bike lane on it and it was covered... But then homeless people would sleep in it... Either way... $6M is for sure worth it.
