Default Naheed Nenshi crowned World Mayor 2014

    Eat your heart out guys

The Calgary mayor’s popularity and acclaim have gone global.

Naheed Nenshi has been named World Mayor 2014, beating successful city leaders in Ghent, Belgium; Surabaya, Indonesia; and others around the planet.

He is the first mayor from a North American city to win the trophy, which the London-based City Mayors Foundation has awarded seven times since its inception in 2004.

The committee has recognized the second-term mayor’s handling of Calgary’s 2013 flood, as well as the attention he has gained from urban thinkers around North America.

“He is an urban visionary who doesn’t neglect the nitty-gritty of local government,” the citation says.

“For many in North America and indeed Europe, Mayor Nenshi is a role model for decisive management, inclusivity and forward planning.”

The news came out Monday, on Nenshi’s 43rd birthday.

The foundation, based in London, hands out the award to a “mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his / her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world,” its website states.

The 2012 winner was Inaki Azkuna, mayor of Bilbao, Spain.

The major accolade comes at a time when Nenshi faces tension among his 14 council colleagues, weeks after he said publicly he’s heard complaints of councillors getting “totally drunk” in public. Half of council criticized him and many urged Nenshi to apologize for spreading harmful rumours, but the mayor has said he has nothing to apologize for.

all he did was stay up late and tweet a lot. The actual work was done by people from emergency services.

I guess they mean unless you're on council with him...or disagree with him

They recognized him for his 'handling' of it...as in leadership. How many times does a major organization find itself in a crisis and the person in charge drops the ball communicating with the public and coordinating efforts? I thought Nenshi did the job the public required of him. But it's 'hip' on Beyond to hate the guy so I get it. He's not perfect, obviously though.

I haven't been this outraged since Homer Simpson got the Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.

Any way to nominate Ralph Klein?
People seem to not really understand what a good leader is or how to run a city.
Nenshi just tweets a lot, when he looks good doing it.

The World Mayor Project invites participants to nominate city leaders who best demonstrate:
Honest and open governance - Tweets when he see's it as advantage Nenshi.
Leadership and vision - Don't really see the future of city infrastructure going well with him.
Management abilities = Just raise taxes.
    Financial acumen = Raise Taxes.
Social and economic awareness = Raise taxes to spend more money.

The ability to provide security and to protect the environment
To displaying the will and ability to foster tolerance and amity among communities of different cultural, racial and social backgrounds

Figure out time travel and/or the death problem
Bring Klein back and convince him to run for mayor against an incumbent
    Secure funding for mayoral campaign
    If he wins, nominate him.

    Pretty straight forward.

Build bike lanes catering to the 1% and not even allowing the other 99% a say (when bankers and the rich do this everyone complains but Nenshi is a hero), tweet a lot, approve 800k blue circles, increase city spending significantly, raise taxes, raise taxes again, you guessed it...raise taxes again.

Sounds like he's really done a lot for the city. In times like this I want a mayor and council who will advocate and fight tooth and nail for hard spending cuts across the board. Instead our mayor accepts a raise and wants the city to hire 500 additional people to work for the over staffed city.

I can understand wanting to bash Nenshi.. but if you're going to do it, don't make yourself look stupid by bashing him for stuff where you agree with him and that wasn't his fault in the first place?
