US Spec revealed, they are using the new 7 speed.

2018 Golf R

The Golf R—the most powerful Golf model ever to be sold in the North American market—is equipped with an EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection TSI 2.0-liter engine that produces 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque (achieved using premium fuel). The Golf R is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or—new for 2018 and exclusive to Golf R—a seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic.

New features for the 2018 model year include standard LED headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs); LED taillights; an 8-inch display for the Composition Media system; Start-Stop for DSG-equipped models; and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

Standard features retained from the 2017 Golf R model include the 4Motion all-wheel drive system; 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; Performance Monitor (Sport HMI); Electronic Parking Brake; Drive Mode Select with Race Mode; KESSY keyless access with push-button start; 12-way power driver’s seat; ambient lighting; automatic headlights with rain sensor; heated sport seats with leather seating surfaces; Car-Net App-Connect; Car-Net Security & Service with a six-month trial; SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a three-month trial; Voice Control; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and Climatronic.

New equipment in the 2018 Golf R with DCC and Navigation model includes an 8-inch touchscreen for the Discover Media navigation system and Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring. Existing equipment includes 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with an all-new design for the 2018 model year; ACC; Blind Spot Monitoring; Lane Assist; Light Assist; Park Distance Control; DCC suspension control; Car-Net Guide & Inform with a three-month trial and the Fender Premium Audio System.

Yeah the new 2018 launches quick.

I think 2017 is maybe 4.5sec or higher.

It's a decently strong pulling car. Again not crazy but enough for a enjoyable daily. Really needs tune + downpipe to wake it up and get into the 3s range.

I think it's awesome you can buy a ~$42K hatch that is that fast. I wish there were more things like it. For me, 4.2 sec wouldn't need "waking up"

I wonder if that's the euro-spec one with the performance package?

The North American spec ones don't get any more power or better tires so I don't see how it could be quicker than the 15-17's. And with (I'm assuming) closer gear ratios it'll still need 3rd gear to hit 60MPH.

Also the 6 speed is a typo - the VW press releases have all clarified it's the 7 speed.

I'm ordering an 18 for certain, unless a fully loaded DSG Tornado red unit pops up for ~5K cheaper (either via finance rate or msrp price).

Only debate for me on the 18 is if the Viper green is the same as the Audi viper green then that color, if it's the washed out viper green on the scirocco then I'll just get a red one.

Yeah he is. He cut me off really badly and hid in his car at the light. Also stopped traffic while he talked to his bro in the other lane. Wouldn't even make eye contact. Manlet in an R. Would that ever be hilarious if he was on here
