Blacks going the way of blockbuster, not due to the economyOriginally posted by pheoxs
Blacks photography announced their closing down all their stores. Guess they're joining Futureshop and Target.
Yes, people have already been laid off but there will not likely be anymore layoffs

sounds like my dad. Give me another 10 years, and I'll be as grumpy as him and yell at you for some silly reason.Originally posted by 01RedDX
Years and years ago, I worked near Scotia centre and brought in a 35mm Rebel to the photo shop to consign. The owner, an older Chinese gentleman, chewed me out, saying "how can I sell this, the flash doesn't close all the way?!" Years later, I realized that I had the honor of being yelled at by your dad!
Yea, I talked about Bell/The Source which makes sense. Blacks selling phones makes no sense though, who would go into a camera store to buy a phone?Originally posted by 01RedDX
As for Telus buying Blacks, I believe it was so they would have a retail chain for their mobility and internet products, just like Bell/The Source, Sprint/Radio Shack. I think you were the one who told me that in another thread some months ago.

Well apparently the vast majority of the world thinks cell phones are cameras now so

To be honest, I think this is awesome. Whenever I was up north, it really irked me how much people get paid to do jobs like this (i.e. not professionals or skilled trades). Not even heavy haulers, fuckin driving a water truck in circles all day is still into 6 figures, it's a joke really. Call me a dickwad if you want, but if I was a business owner, you better believe I'd be trying to replace those guys with a GPS; regardless of oil price or economic climate it's a good decision.Originally posted by 01RedDX

I wonder if they were hedging their bets that cellphone camera technology would fail and people would revert back to normal camera's? No idea.
The acquisition of blacks' was for more than anything the ability to get into retail locations that were not otherwise available to TELUS, either due to exclusivity agreements, or lack of retail space opportunities in some high value / demand locations.
In all reality, the $28M price tag to acquire Blacks' was pretty cheap to get into all those retail locations. And all they did in each location was to add a small kiosk for the TELUS brand. Way cheaper than setting up all those stores from scratch.
now, this is going off the best recollection I have of the time when this was all announced.
Also of note, I believe the CBC article also mentioned that all current Blacks' employees are going to be transitioned into roles within TELUS too, so, in the end, not too sure how many people are actually going to end up laid off.

Hook a girl in being a sugar daddy, then train her to be his sugar mama
At an average (salary) of $200,000 per person? wtfOriginally posted by 01RedDX

Well, unless the autonomous vehicles are more expensive then that.Originally posted by cjblair

Also, its a bit different of conditions then down south where it is hot and dry. Winter driving is a whole 'nother ball game. High traction conditions allow you to get away with murder driving-wise.
I do agree though, people priced themselves out of jobs. As I always say, anybody working up north should not view it as a career, but as a way to make mad bank while the gettin' is good, and then transition to a lower paying job down here when they have a million or two in the bank.
Sounds to me like most of the trucks are already capable, just more of a corporate flick the switch type situation.Originally posted by HiTempguy1

kind of like how business's activate contactless payments when they already sue modern chip and pin terminals with built in NFC.
Its bizzare how many terminals have the hardware but are disabled.

There is absolutely no way that autonomous tech costs more than hiring multiple drivers. Plus, drivers make more mistakes than a GPS will, and as I'm sure you're aware, producers put a huge priority on incident reduction in their facilities.Originally posted by HiTempguy1

But yes. Unskilled labour in Northern AB is WAY overpaid.
800 people averaging 200,000/pp is $160 million in operating costs. The trucks would have to be beyond absurdly expensive to justify keeping the people.Originally posted by HiTempguy1
