I don't mean to be a d-bag but it is pretty hard to be sympathetic when you're in one of the most well known jobs to be cut first, and you have what is arguably a $35,000 car and a brand new silverado in the driveway.
Probably worth $15,000 at best if mint. Who knows, maybe it was given to him by a relative that passed away.

Fair enough and yeah that sucks. We have a drafter position coming up next week.
my brothers company mid size EPCM just had a town hall and they announced they looking for 3D drafters and designers like 5-6 of them. that was some good news..........OT for everyone.....and they looking for resumes now.
but I can imagine they will have a flood of resumes within the week after that announcement, anyone in this industry knows a handful of drafters out of work.

They didn't breach...YET, unlike Lightstream, they might actually be a CPG take out target as well. They were close but I think they managed to avert it.Originally posted by Feruk
Solid asset base, yes. Properly executed, no. The process for a major is significantly different from a junior. I've worked for both. The scrutiny and attention to detail is lower at a junior.
Legacy hadn't gone under, but they were gonna breach debt covenants (if they hadn't already, I'm not sure). Price was the biggest driver of their failure, agreed. I think we're saying something similar. You're saying debt is what got them in trouble, which I agree with 100%. What I'm saying is it was poor asset management that got them that debt.
There's boatload of companies in this position though, Lightstream, Longrun, Surge, MEG...curious to see how they make it through all of this.
Heard Transcanada let go of some contractors today. Not sure about employees
As expected, business community is pausing on announcing investments pending royalty review. NDP need to get it over with and show their cards so accountants can crunch the numbers before everyone get jobs back, if any at all.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
I do have to apologize for the snapping with the spiteful comment, I am just starting to go into panic mode in the realization that things are not going to get better for at least a year, if not more.
So look like 2016 Summer would be the earliest unless oil spikes back to $100 in short time.
Jesus. I'm good right now but I can see full panic mode starting to erupt come late fall this year after I'm done with both classes and farming. Fuck it's an abysmal job market right now for anybody outside of the construction related trades. Urgh....

The place I just started working at as a project manager is dying for good people.
We really need someone to manage our electrical department. We do mostly panel work. Looking for an industrial electrician/controls tech with management/supervisor/lead hand experience. Also needs to know code.
95% of our work is plc controlled hvac units, all custom.
Shoot me a pm or email if your interested!
Our electrical drafter is shit too, need to replace him.
We need a CWB B pressure welder to. I think we found a guy but he will have to pass tests at sgs Ludwig so that is also not a sure thing yet.
Machining, Fabricating, Welding etc.
The government and royalty review are not what's been causing layoffs. The review is to start in 6 months, and probably last 6 months, and then industry will have time to adjust. So we're 1.5 to 2 years away from an increase. Royalty incentives on new wells usually only last 18 months, so the talk of "reduction due to royalty review" is just fear mongering for now. I'm sure when royalties and taxes are announced, we'll see reductions.Originally posted by Xtrema

There are calls for the most consolidation we've seen in years. My guess is the bloodbath will be even worse for service companies. People like Trashcan won't be around in a couple years.Originally posted by bigboom

my uncle left Alberta for a civil drafting job in Vancouver, pay is like %50 of what he was making previously, but he knew nothing is going to happen anytime soon in Calgary. He literally just picked up and left his wife and kids here and is staying with family their until the economy here picks up!Originally posted by Sugarphreak
So I think my Vancouver options have now fallen through.... apparently Albertans have this stigma of being overpaid and lazy, and I think my applications have been poorly received because of that.
So what is left.... Winnipeg? *Sigh*
I don't think its that bad, but yes will be a big pay decrease

perhaps mention that you're originally from B.C. ? You never know...it might help. I'm kind of worrying about that stigma myself when we move to the oakanagan.Originally posted by Sugarphreak

I don't know what you do, but are there any opportunities with Potash or Agrium in SK? Or do they keep all their white collar jobs in Alberta?
Thats a result of your first point. People assume if you are over-qualified you will jump ship at the first opportunity. It sucks but it's a fair assumption.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
It is kind of embarrassing that I've been rejected for jobs I could basically do in my sleep.
It's like: If I'm an engineer and can't find work so I decide to work at Starbucks to pay the bills why I keep looking, you can be sure the second I get a real job offer I'm gone.
On another note: Our office has weathered the downturn decently so far. We had downsized a bit in 2014 before things slowed down and we're still wrapping up some huge projects that are too far along to stop. Things are going to get ugly in July/August though as two of our bigger projects that probably ~half our office is on are done.
