Yes, people have already been laid off but there will not likely be anymore layoffs

At first I thought you guys were misinterpreting me, but maybe not, haha.
1. You're giving away your ability to negotiate for 3 years in exchange for NOTHING. Your job security is not guaranteed, they could still lay you off the next day if they wanted to, your severance would just be 25% lower.
2. If you told them you wanted to renegotiate or you'd quit, they'd laugh you out the door. The job market in IT is fine right now. If you can't find a new job, then you sure as shit don't have the clout to threaten to quit.
I'm saying go ahead and sign the contract, but don't pretend it's a good deal. Start looking for another job immediately, not just when things pick up. You've got all these people too scared to switch jobs right now because they think the job market is piss so there's no competition. Once things pick up suddenly everybody who took a pay cut is starting to look elsewhere.
Email for success!
My thoughts exactly.Originally posted by Mibz

The company putting this in front of their staff is just going to end up losing their best and retaining their worst.
Granted they might have to trim budgets by 25%, but this is not a smart way to do it.
Depends on the line of work. There are jobs that keep you in exposure for higher pay grades down the road and there are jobs that are not even worth your time.Originally posted by LilDrunkenSmurf
It's a terrible deal. You're giving away your negotiating rights, and cost of living raises over the next 3 years. I'd rather walk away, since I doubt oil will take that long to turn around. 25% is also more than the industry average for working in O&G in IT. You're really only typically looking at a 20% different between O&G and non O&G work.
There are places that have a negative unemployment rate (there's a starving job market), so they're calling around the country to poach folks right now.
25% is off contracting rate. You should be able to survive on that. If 25% off salary, that's a whole different deal and it's time to start looking.
I agree that 3 year is a bit long for a contract. That's equivalent of out of work for 9 months for the amount you are signing away. A year or so make more sense.
I don't know if 3 years is enough for this downturn to turn around. I think the current employment rate will be the new norm for at least the next 3-5 years.
These tends to be bigger firms I assume. Smaller ones will not even bother and go after 25% head count.Originally posted by sputnik

What the fuck is wrong with you? Sorry, I posted two minutes prior to your post. I'm sitting here with my feet in Lake Okanagan, drinking my coffee and not refreshing the page every 2 seconds before I post.

You are asking me what my problem is and you are the one freaking out? Obviously your holiday isn't working as intended. I suggest you put some Baileys in your coffee and go get on your significant other. Report back after please.Originally posted by adamc

I would assume that the majority are from the Keystone XL and Energy East project. Projects over 1 Billion are Major Projects
Sucks because when Keystone XL was frozen, lots of engineers and workers moved to Energy East and other projects, 2 years later, bam
