Question Things to do around Calgary & the Rockies

Right so it's been a LONG time since I've been to Calgary and I know a LOT has changed in the last 11 years, so I need a bit of help.

We are going to Vancouver for a wedding (start of June) and then a lot of my family is driving up to Edmonton after the wedding to see my grandparents, should be a decent road trip!

From there the missus and I are heading to Calgary to see some friends. We will probably spend at the most, a week (from June 13th and flying out on the 20th) in Calgary and surrounding areas.

I've done the typical Banff, Lake Louise etc before but the other half hasn't. So that is on the agenda but clearly not enough and it would be nice to explore a bit more.

So whats worth seeing/doing around the Rockies and Calgary these days?

    Any info is appreciated.

EDIT: The other option is spend about 3-4 days in Calgary and then the rest in Vegas. I'd rather spend in in Alberta because I miss it but the other half just wants Vegas lol - I'm trying to get her to fall in love with Canada!

how about a trip to Kelowna to extend your stay instead of doing Vegas (lots of wine vineyards, beach area/lake, party city, golf, foam Festival - http://www.tourismkelowna.com/includ...ts/event/4185/)

If it's still chilly outside, Banff hot springs is always a good choice

    River rafting - banff
    Lake Minnewanka
Float at the Bow River for a day!-Calgary
    Luge - COP

Helicopter Ride in and around Calgary/Mountain area! If you can afford it, it's worth the money!

Ever think of a day hike in the mountains? Lots of trails to choose from, it all depends on how easy or how hard you want them to be.

Camping! Even if it's just an overnight stay!

Drive 93 North from Lake Louise to Jasper on your way to Edmonton. Fantastic scenery along the way.

Kananaskis!! Go to the village, drive up to the lakes, check out a night of camping there, or stay in the hotel.
    Johnston Canyon hike in Banff.

Waterton Lakes National Park and Pincher Creek areas.

After all that in-law family crap, I'd be wanting time in Vegas as well. Give in, you'll be in a better place as a result.

That is wildflower season in Waterton so it might be pretty nice. The Waterton Wildflower Festival is on during June 19 - 27th.

Also you could do the scenic cruise:

I love Waterton NP, it's my favorite place in Alberta. If I could retire tomorrow, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

Thanks for all the info so far guys. I'll start researching on it and also a route.

Sadly, due to Vegas being so cheap from Calgary it looks like that is definitely on the cards, probably 3 nights. However, I'm quite happy to get rid of some on our Edmonton days and add it to this part of the trip.

My gf bought us a helicopter tour out of the tour place beside Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino on the way to Banff. Tour flew by a the mountains, showed off a few lakes, the continental divide, then landed on a easy hike area in the middle of nowhere between the peaks for a 30 minute hike.

I'm not a big fan of hiking, but this dumbed it down enough where it was really enjoyable. Skipping all the tough trails to get to/leave the area via helicopter is the shit haha.

Rage, how did you feel in terms of safety and competency, the tour overall etc with that company? How long was the ride round trip?

I only have experience with Alpine Helicopters for work and they really impressed me.

Didn't feel like there was anything dangerous at all. Really happy with the tour. Wish I knew the name of the tour company there.

I want to say the trip was around 3 hours in total? That included the extra landing and 30 minute hike.

Below is a groupon for a heli tour similar to the one rage described, although it seems to have less flying and more hiking in comparison. I have no idea what the standard rates are as i've never looked into it, but supposedly the groupon is 50% off.

That looks like the one I did, with the one hour winderness option added to the full 55 minute tour package.

If you are coming down from Edmonton, go thru Jasper, icefield/skywalk, Banff/lake Louise and the back to Calgary. That will burn a few days at least.
