Jeremy Clarkson: Richard Hammond and James May 'rejected offer to continue as presenters on Top Gear without suspended co-host'

James May and Richard Hammond have turned down an offer to continue as presenters of Top Gear without their co-host Jeremy Clarkson.

The pair said they "didn't want to do it without Jeremy" despite being given the chance to present the rest of the series while Clarkson is suspended, a BBC executive reportedly said.

Clarkson has been temporarily removed as presenter after allegedly punching producer Oisin Tymon during a row over a steak dinner on set.

It is believed both men have now both given their evidence to the BBC's inquiry into the "fracas".

A BBC spokesman refused to comment on any developments, saying: "As we said last week we have an investigation ongoing and we won't comment further until that is concluded."


The last episodes of the series have been postponed, causing the BBC to lose millions of viewers and receive thousands of complaints. Top Gear is estimated to earn the corporation about £300million annually.

May, 52, and Hammond, 45, are yet to comment officially on the spat, but have been making light of Clarkson's suspension in posts on Twitter.

The presenters appear to have been having mixed experiences while they enjoy an extended holiday.

Yesterday May tweeted: "Seriously, if you really are unemployed, good luck to you. It's not funny in reality."

Making jokes about his unrelenting boredom, he also wrote: "Three light bulbs in our house need replacing. I'm doing it today. #StillUnemployed.

"Great news! We also need some new hoover bags. I can spin that out for an hour or two.

Meanwhile Hammond tweeted a picture of his dog and said: "Not trying to be cryptic, just enjoying a gorgeous morning. Off."


The trio are due to host four live Top Gear shows in Norway on March 27 and 28. Their BBC contracts are due to expire three days later, which could render any disciplinary hearings redundant.

A petition to reinstate Clarkson had today attracted about 970,000 supporters.

Not without the budget of BBC to film them. Just look at Fifth Gear.

Nor will BBC sell the IP back to Clarkson. Top Gear has grown considerably since Clarkson sold it.

You are crazy to think that channel 4 or Sky would have a lesser budget than BBC. That's the reason why F1 went to Sky instad.

That's a pretty interesting theory, only thing is I don't see how holding off the series would benefit them in anyway. It has never stopped them from making a special in the past.

Has anyone considered that Clarkson is old as fuck and might just be done? Hammond might find a place elsewhere but May is on in the years to. With their kind of money and connections retirement at ~50 seems reasonable...

I mean really, how many more years did people think top gear had with the current hosts?
