Where can you check which petitions were approved?

They do these local improvements twice a year so in this round they had the following stats:

    - 28 valid alley paving petitions were completed
    - 10 of them were appealed
    - 1 appeal was successful, so that project was cancelled
    - 9 appeals were not returned (ie: they gave up or didn't get enough signatures)

So if you get it approved the chances of an appeal happening appear to be very slim.

    Now we wait for asphalt

All lanes are typically gravel in Calgary, even in brand new subdivisions, unless the developer chooses to pay for asphalt themselves.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Correct. And the new developers only pave them if they absolutely have to. I've seen them paved if they're too long and need to have storm drains in them or if they back onto multifamily developments then usually the city forces the multifamily developer to pave them for fire fighting access.

That's shitty. I would never live In a lane home with gravel.

Now who's going to be the first to rip some rubber strips down that lane when done?

Bump, for those that got this done, how does the garage tie ins work? From my garage door I have about a extra foot and a half of concrete to the lane way. Will the city pave right up to that? Thanks

Yes they patched between the alley and our garage apron. If you need anything more then several inches I think they told us they would charge a small extra for that home owner. But they did ours no problem.

I miss the paved alley we had when I lived on Chapel road in Charleswood. It was paved before I moved in but talking to a neighbour we had a guy that was high up in the roads division with the city living on the street that got the thing going. Not only did we get our street plowed after every snowfall but they also plowed our back alley. Handy when I was driving a little MR2.

Someone important must live on my street too because it gets plowed pretty regularly and it's not on a priority 1 or 2 plow route, and it's not a bike or bus route either. Actually wish they wouldn't because it's narrow enough they can only do one swipe down the middle and the windrows tend to block in the parked cars.

Would love my rear lane paved. But I think that’s an uphill battle with people who need lawn mowing is optional and their front grass is a place to park boats.

Thats definitely not the demographic that cares about back alleys/paving.

Organize it yourself and sell it to people as "getting a finalized quote to determine if its feasible for our street" and that "if it comes back too expensive there is an appeal period and it can be cancelled then". That statement is 100% true and exactly how the process works.

Except it can only get appealed if someone takes charge and goes door to door to get new signatures. But people are lazy and that usually doesn't happen.

Unless they're old. Old people have plenty of time on their hands. I'm still waiting for the guy that started our appeal to pass away so I can start another petition to get it paved.

Yea you definitely need time.... a lot of time. Mostly because it is impossible to get people to answer their doors.

I can see that being the most annoying part. There is no real reason for anyone to ever answer their door unless they are expecting a guest or for a legit emergency - might even be faster to leave people notes.

Can you time the process so that the appeals action is open during a window of super cold winter ? (eg. 'Yes' in the fall and 'no' appeal in the winter)

    Game the system.
