I still use my Tab 3, and it's a couple years old. The one you picked should be fine for quite a while.
buy a used iPad
things are rock solid
I have the 8 inch version of that same tablet and it works fine
I use it for Internet, YouTube, beyond, other forums, email, and whatever other shit you do on a phone but it's nice to have a bigger screen and it's all good
I am a big fan of the Tab 3. The thing has be wicked since day one plus i can add all my stuff from the app store to it.
iPad. Android tablets don't get updates and are basically disposable.
Update for an Ipad is a new one at a low price of 1000$.Originally posted by googe

My Android tab still gets updates and its a tab 3 fyi.
Don't get an ipad. They are truly disposable and over priced.
I love my nexus 7 and it's gotten ton of updates, currently running the newest version of android. Same with my nexus 4 phone.
I've been wanting to upgrade to a new nexus (phone and tablet) but they keep updating my devices, so there is really no point in me buying something new. Even though both devices are getting fairly old, they are still relatively quick and both running the newest version of android.

The Microsoft Store has a good little bundle for a 7" HP. $99 including office and screen protector. looked little tablet when I was in for a new surface pen the other day.
HP Tablet
yeah if you care about getting the latest updates first, get one fo the google nexus line products, the updates come from google direct, any that are non google flagship nexus stuff, the manufacturer, and then sometimes carrier like to repackage their own crap in and that delays, or sometimes prevent completely any update on the devices.Originally posted by NoPulp

After having a Nexus 7 for awhile, I can't suggest it, the screen is too small. I compare it to my Mom's iPad and it's so much nicer. A nexus 9 is probably the way I'd go if I was starting over.

iPads are a good long-term option if you enjoy Apple's ecosystem. We are still using our 3 year old iPad2, though it is definitely showing its age now. We haven't even added a new apps/etc., just the OS updates getting larger and slower...Originally posted by googe

I've got an ipad 3 and nexus 9, I'd never recommend another ipad I hate it. Nexus 9 is awesome although I haven't used it a lot yet haha
Consider a Venue Pro?
hmmm i like the nexus 9
more than i think first to spend, it is nice though. maybe get keyboard folio for it.
any deals? does this go on sale? i see that google store has $50 googled play credit now.
thanks for the tips.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 . One of the best screens available for tablets.
I use an iPad Mini 2 and a Nexus 9 side-by-side daily as well, and there is no comparison at all, the N9 is a killer tablet. I am absolutely loving mine, and battery life is fantastic.Originally posted by rob the knob

I don't think you'll find many deals though. However, buying from the Google Play Store gets you a 1-year no questions asked replacement warranty that is easily worth the price of shipping.
We also have a Galaxy Tab S 10" and it's pretty awesome, but it still doesn't have Lollipop, and has the TouchWiz overlay, which are the biggest drawbacks IMO - with the Nexus devices you get updates almost immediately. The screen is probably the best there is on any tablet at the moment though, but the N9 is no slouch.
If you're going to use it primarily for movies, you might prefer a 16:9 tablet like the Samsungs, if you are going to use it primarily for reading and web surfing, you will probably prefer the 4:3 ratio of the N9.
Also, if you get a N9, I have a spare smart wake case you can have for free (or anyone else who want's it).
I agree... iphones and ipads have a longer lifecycle, and I think this is due to an ecosystem that has to do with 2 things:Originally posted by Mitsu3000gt

Higher level quality of SDLC for all product available though their store
Pragmatic hardware evolution
I'm an android user, and will probably remain, however my wife's origional ipad mini is still as functional as it was day 1 and is still relevent thanks to system updates and compatiable to most applications
Even though it doesn't have a substantial battery on paper, the OS and the apps are so much better optomized that an ipad can last days whereas my Asus tablet from the same era lasts for maybe 1, and has slowed down drastically, requiring manual cleaning and tinkering
