    Default TekSavvy internet? cheaper alternative?

been looking at ways to reduce my TV & Internet bill when I came across TekSavvy.

Curious if anyone has TekSavvy Cable 25 internet with them, or any experience?

Currently paying $67/month for internet 25. $22 a month cheaper with TekSavvy is not a bad saving. I also heard Shaw provides the infrastructure for their internet. (not sure if this is true)

It is true...you call them, and you switch, they don't even need to come out since you already have shaw setup, at least this was the case for me back in the day with 3web/CIA

    1. You need to buy your own modem and 2. You need to pay an activation fee.

When you factor in those costs vs the promo pricing Telus/shaw offers its the same at the end of the year. You'd be better off phoning shaw and trying to get on a promo pricing.

Also teksavvy doesn't have any TV offerings and you usually get a bundle discount so your tv portion would increase

Cool, but were completely off TV - cut ours out 3 years ago.

If we stick with TekSavvy long enough it might make sense.
Their 25mbs plan is 40$ month, compared to 70$ month with Shaw.
360$ savings per year, modem is 30$ and activation fee is 80$ ..... payback in 4 months

    Tekksavvy is like Linux.

Everyone hates Windows so they switch to Linux but then realize how limited they are and go back to Windows.

And Shaw/Telus are known for their greatness in CS?

But seriously, Im willing to put up with a minor inconvenience to save 360$ annually - as long as their connection is stable (eg internet is not down for days).

If you have no complaints with Shaw, then it will be the same. They just basically move your account to be managed by a 3rd party, nothing else changes. They may have you buy a modem or whatever and pay some activation fee, but it's all the same. So if you are happy with Shaw, TekSavvy won't be any different. It will go down as often as Shaw will..

So about half the price compared to Shaw, yet they use Shaw's infrastructure?

Either Shaw is gouging, or Shaw and the little guys are one in the same.

Reselling is easier and cheaper than owning the infrastructure.

Why would a company do such a thing?

    It doesn't add up.

I'm not the best source for this as it's not my area of expertise, but my understanding is that wholesale Internet rates are mandated by the CRTC to provide a more competitive environment.

In other words, Shaw has to provide wholesalers x amount of bandwidth at a mandated rate. So companies like Teksavvy are essentially renting bandwidth from Shaw and reselling it to customers.

Obviously, this allows companies like Teksavvy to offer lower rates because 1) They buy bandwidth in bulk from Shaw, 2) wholesale rates are mandated by the CRTC and 3) they don't need to deal with all the costs associated with the building and maintenance of infrastructure.

The drawbacks as mentioned is other costs, customer service and loss of discounts. You have to buy your own equipment and pay for installation. You don't have access to a call centre with access to thousands of specialized agents - if you think Shaw customer service is bad, you're in for a treat when you have to call in with a wholesaler. And don't forget customer service extends beyond the call centre - the technicians you get in your home for support/installation, the retail locations etc. And as mentioned, you don't have the discounts that come with bundling your services.

For someone like yourself - if you don't mind paying the fees, are okay with a decrease in customer experience and have no need for bundling discounts, it could work for you. Basically a customer that is solely concerned with the bottom line.

There may be more to it that I may have missed and hopefully I got it all right, like I said its not my area of expertise.

Disclaimer: I am a Shaw employee.

Edit: adding link that speaks to the CRTC mandating wholesale rates:

    No problem!

Also wanted to add that it's not always apples to apples when comparing price.

Shaw has grandfathered packages and the new ones offered don't always matched with Teksavvy.

Looking at what's on the websites just for simplicity, Teksavvy offers Cable 25 for $40, and Shaw offers Internet 30 for $70. So there's definitely some savings there at 5Mbps less speed for Teksavvy, if we ignore Shaw's promotional rates and any bundling discounts (which a lot of customers have).

But if you look at Teksavvy's Cable 50 ($85) vs Shaw's Internet 60 ($90), then it's only a $5 savings with 10 Mbps less speed. And all the drawbacks mentioned in my last post.

So my point is, it's not entirely accurate to say you'll pay half the amount if you go with a wholesaler - it'll depend on your current package (grandfathered or new), what discounts you have, and then how much you value speed and all the other factors I mentioned earlier.

Bump. Anyone make the switch in the last 11 months?
Looking to go from Shaw 30 - $73

    to Teksavvy 30 - $44.95 + $109modem +$59 activation = 213
So payback begins after month 3.

I switched to lightspeed 2 weeks ago, was tired of Telus charging me for overage fees (especially since their online bandwidth meter continued to be drastically different than my router logs) as well as the endless cycle of calling in to jump promo packages.

So far it's been good, when I was previously with teksavvy/shaw I had issues in the evenings with really laggy / intermitent internet and was told our neighbourhood node was saturated. I've done speed tests now and it's rock solid so I guess in the last year they must've upgraded things which is nice.

So far so good and same points as sugarphreak thus far.

It's $10/month more and the only difference I understand is having access to a local office (I never go over bandwith anyways so that's no concern for me). Hmm...
