Default The position of "F" you

From the movie "the gambler" I just watched on the plane, 2.5/5 movie but this rant was 5/5 for me.

It got me thinking lol approaching mid 30s, no marriage and no kids. My ambitions are declining, desire for material life declining, risk tolerance near zero, just basically want to chill and travel. Perhaps I need more purpose and passion to get motivated again.

Sell my house, Buy a condo, go debt free, and just say fuck it.

2.5mill is not possible but 1mill before 40 is reasonable.

    $500k cash pay condo
    $500k market portfolio

    Fuck everything.

With two young kids, yeah, several million. Although just one million would get me a long way there.

Both kids pretty much grown, so a million would do it. Id drop my tools, get up and walk away. Wouldn't even bother to clean them up.

Haha, that put a smile on my face. My level would be around a mill as well.

2.5 million give or take. But I honestly don't know what I'd do instead, so I doubt I'd be walking away.

$4M for me probably. Enough that I could buy a practical nice DD (i.e. 911 turbo), pay off my house, have a little extra and still have a >$3M portfolio. I wouldn't walk away though, I'd bleed money if I did that (I'd spend time golfing and racing probably). I'd try and get involved in one of my dad's businesses to keep busy instead of slaving away at an EPC like I currently am

At the rate I'm going, I could see early retirement at 45. But by retire, I mean quit my day job, open a small two bay shop, and work on race cars all day bringing in a couple grand a month while juggling what would by hypothetical teenagers at that time.

Honestly, with male life expectancy getting so high, I wouldn't write off being a family man until after 40 nowadays. For a woman its different because their shit wears out quicker lol.

And if you take care of yourself, 60 isnt much different from 50 from what I've seen. If you have the spare time, you'll be so far ahead cash wise when it comes to raising kids that life should be a lot easier if you want it to be.

Anything more than 2m and I'd likely walk away from the working world.

This was the best part of the movie, still resonates.

Thanks for posting, and he makes a great point. But realistically, working for the man won't get you there anytime soon. Anyone who reaches millionaire status at that young age has likely done it through equity investments and real estate, with a little sprinkle of good luck or help. Investing in safe assets and putting 10k away a year for 20 years won't get you there. The drive for extreme wealth and success peaks in the mid-20s and starts to wane as perspective on what is important is more prevalent. I did my time in the trenches and have no interest in going back.
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

I would probably walk away from my current job, but I would still do paid work somewhere. I have an idea of what kind of job I'd really like, so I'd probably work towards starting that kind of business. I'm 90% sure this would work, and I'd be able to bring in $50k a year doing it, and have quite a bit of fun. I actually have another guy who pretty much has the same dream as me, so I think he'd come work for me. He'd be walking away from a ~$200k/year job though, maybe I should be buying lottery tickets with him, lol.

Actually, if I do get laid off and nothing interesting pops up, I'm pretty sure I could start this business with minimal capital.

Fuck, I think I just talked myself into quitting. Shit.

A million bucks + house paid off. Assume 5% annual return this would generate $50,000 passive income (without touching the principal) which would be more than enough for us to live on with no mortgage payment.

Exactly. $1mill is all we would need. Keep working, because I'd be bored otherwise, however I could do whatever entry level job I wanted and maintain current lifestyle, even at minimum wage.

see the trick to this entire fuck you amount is you still need more on top of it... but not as much as you use to need... and thats why you can say fuck you to things you dont want to do!

for me im never going to be happy working for the man, so my fuck you amount is:

house paid, late model car paid, business with $0 debt, and a nice steady income from it that i dont need to put more than 20hrs a week into. that would be my fuck you minimum... my fuck you ideal though would be slightly different. i'd need purely passive income, and it would have to be north of $300k/year... cause i have expensive hobbies, and my entire time would be filled with them

A million bucks in the bank and a job cutting grass at a golf course in the summer.
