Default What is the point of a Garburator?

Serious question, how is a garburator a useful addition to your life?

Do that many people like dumping solid food down the sink?

I have had them in the past, and the seemingly exclusive use for them is scaring the poop out of you when you are trying to turn the lights on in the dark.

To me solid food goes in the garbage, simple. I suppose the compost people could put them in the compost. Still not in the sink.

So people who have them do you like them and use them? Or is it another stupid gimmick to go wrong.

    Context:

My mother in law wants me to get one installed, she apparently has one just sitting around. But i don't really want the stupid thing and said no.

Apparently she has been harassing my fiancee about it for months and now she just wants us to install it to shut her up

But i still think its a stupid idea and I don't want to have some idiot plumber screwing with things under my sink, potentially damaging it in the process over something i don't even want.

I don't like stinky food in my garbage in the house or rotting out in the alley. That's pretty much it, but composting is probably smarter.

I never wanted one till my last place had one installed.... now I'll never go without out.

I don't like my house smelling like rotting food so everything get garburator'd up and washed down the drain. Easy and no clean up.

    pealing carrots, thats the reason

if the electrical is in place though, there isnt much a plumber could do to crew up your sink

    Install isn't that hard,

I did the one in my last house.

That being said we hardly used it and we are in our current home for over 10 years now without one. haven't missed one bit.

I thought we were heading towards organic recycling in a few years anyway so if you are gonna pay for the service why would you put it down the sink.

    Fight the good fight !!!

Quick and easy disposal of stuff that will smell up the house, smell up the garage (where the bins are stored) if put in the garbage.

    This.

And RE: mixing up with the lights... if you don't have a switch for it right beside the tap, you're doing it wrong

lol I see the powers that be actually like the damn things.

Everything is indeed pre wired with a switch in the cabinet under the sink.

My switch is a little push-down button drop mounted in the edge of the sink, super convenient.

I've never owned one and didn't really think they were that prevalent until moving to Calgary, where they seem to be roughed in to every house.

I'm one of the compost people so have no use for one. I would have preferred that circuit to be used to put an outlet or two on a fixed island, rather than having a useless outlet inside the sink cabinet.

I have outlets on either side of the island so that isnt a problem for me.

Maybe ill stop worrying about this and let her install it then.

Boggles the mind sometimes how much people can get out of shape over decisions that don't affect them. IE my MIL at me not having a garburetor.

Never had one and don't want one and I do all the dish washing at home. When I was a kid we lived with this family that had one and it smelled like death everytime they had to clean it out because some dumbass kid would put utensils down it.

The plus side is that if she doesn't start clearing the table and washing dishes after dinner you can look at her squarely and say "Bitch, please." and then go fire it up for her.

When a utensil goes into mine I just turn it off, reach in and grab it. No need to clean it out. Throw a lemon or orange down there twice a month to clean it, mine's never had an odour.

Basically so that when you rinse off your plates you never have to empty the sink strainer into the garbage again.

It is. Solid matter from waste treatment plant is taken to the landfills, there's giant compost piles there.

    THIS.

I didn't have one until my current place and it's really convenient. I'm not throwing full on steaks down there but for the little bits and pieces of food that I rinse off my plates and bowls before I throw them in the dishwasher, it's perfect. Just a quick rinse, flip the switch and you're done. No more having to dig into the nasty sink strainer.

I get being annoyed at why your MIL would care so much but once you have it, you'll quietly admit it was a good idea hahaha.
