San Diago is definitely one of my favorite cities. Great weather year round (not too hot) too.

I think this quote from Ekliptix sums it up for me...
I could easy snag a job making 20% more annually in any major US city, but every time I'm down there for work, I'm reminded of exactly how much more dangerous it can be. "You don't have a gun? how are you going to protect yourself?" comes from the mouth of damn near everyone I meet down there.Originally posted by Ekliptix
July 2012 - Was camping for July long weekend along the Guadalupe river when I got a call that one of my 5 friends/coworkers had been shot 4 times. He lived and I won't go into the details, but it reminded me that there are dangerous places and people in Houston.
America - Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there... (except maybe Hawaii...)

I love San Diego, great town. I'm probably down there this July, and I was down last November.

I'm assuming that this "rampant" gun violence we Canadians are always talking about happening in the US is actually pretty isolated. The media lives to blow shit out proportion and I'm guessing that when ugly shit happens in the wrong part of town, it's sold to suburbia as "Danger Next Door". I'm guessing that if you lived a normal life in a nice part of any major US city, you'd probably never see gun violence in your life.
Or maybe I'm wrong and it really is the wild, wild west. But I doubt it. My biggest reason for not moving their is trying to get permanent residency / citizenship. And my kids are going to hit post secondary in 6 - 10 years and that shit is a fraction of the price up here.

It's ok. They seem to think there's no difference between college (cheaper) and university.Originally posted by Masked Bandit

I'll stay here because I like my meters and degrees celius.
Maybe not the public gun fights, but Hawaii, outside of the tourist areas is a dangerous place.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
Clearly you have not watched the Hawaii 5-0 series... which I take to be a true representation of the Island because it is on TV. The entire place is just a lawless underworld full of large scale public gun fights, theft, kidnappings and drug deals.

In Maui, off the beaten path they hate tourists. Had quite an adventure when we went exploring in a convertible!Originally posted by benyl

Judging by Hawaii Five-O, Hawaii has a sky-high murder rate followed by an incredibly high rate of officer fatalities and officer-involved shootings.

I went off tourist areas years ago and it was ok. Granted, I had long hair, really tanned from driving a convertible, and generally looked Hawaiian.

I have to admit, when I'm in Hawaii I also hate tourists. Or actually, when I travel anywhere I hate tourists... Maybe its just me.Originally posted by kenny

I always get along fairly well with the locals though.
Pretty much. Been here 10 years, still haven't even heard a gunshot outside of a shooting range. Spent plenty of time in all of the major west coast cities, lived downtown in some of them. Obviously it happens, but the probability of encountering it, while perhaps higher than Canada, is extremely low.Originally posted by Masked Bandit

We have open carry laws here, still have never seen anyone carrying, except the guy working at the gun store. Which I've only been to once, because friends from Alberta who love guns were in town.
