Default Google builds their own car to test self-driving technology

Unlike the retrofitted vehicles that Google has used in the past, their new self-driving car has no gas or brake pedals. In fact there is no steering wheel either because as Google puts it, “we don’t need them!”. On the inside of the vehicle, there is simply a start/stop button and a screen to display a map with navigational information. The autonomous vehicle seats two people with plenty of room for storage, or pets (including service animals). The vehicle will initially be limited to 25mph while Google completes additional tests with an initial fleet of about 100 vehicles. If proven successful they plan on expanding the autonomous vehicle program by testing with select partners in California.

They need to figure out how this works under weather. So far it only works on sunny days.

Don't be silly. Google controls the weather.

    Schedules.

Although I can see this technology being paired with public transit so we have fleets of automated buses. It'd be like the Skytrain system but on the road.

Unless unions have something to say...

If scheduling is the issue, improve existing infrastructure. Don't add crap.

I fucking told you guys that drive automatics instead of manuals it was going to come to this if you kept it up... but did you listen? Nooooooooooo
    LOL

i welcome the change. sometimes i like to drive but its rarely to work/downtown/anywhere busy because its not fun driving from red light to red light.

id love to just read the paper, sip some coffee and have my robot car drop me off at work then drive itself back to pick me up.

How long until autonomous technology is applied towards racing? The day a self-driven car is faster than a car driven by a pro driver will be a sad, sad day IMO

Yes because automatic transmissions which date back to the 1920's are the key to unlocking today's solid state computer controlled technology.

The ignorance of your post does however illustrate why nobody listens to you.

I would imagine this might be better than a human driver because of all the sensors. It would be interesting to see how it performed under blizzard conditions or heavy fog.

I would love to own something like this in the future though. No more calling cabs after the bar and no more public transit This would also enable a lot more people to get a car that is more fun for the weekend. My drive to work is pretty congested, hence why I own an automatic. If I only drove on the weekend I would get something more engaging.

But the thing is Sugarphreak, most people in general do like Automatics. And a lot of people would rather not drive if they didn't have to. So the fact that a lot of cars these days come with lane assist, self-parking, automatic braking, is all a plus is most people's books.
