    Default Register barn find motorcycle

Any experience registering/insuring old motorcycles? Bike hasn't been registered in many years, comes with Bill of sale but not from owner who last registered it. Also told it's an Alberta bike but haven't been able to confirm that.

Got it really cheap but before rebuilding it. I'd like to know if there will be any issues with getting it road worthy.

It will have to have an out of province at least...I'd talk to Phil at the Old Motorcycle shop in Ogden.
I know with the old cars I work on the bill of sale doesn't have to be from the last registered owner.

I have heard that most registries can't tell the difference between a bill of sale that is legitimate and one that you make up and get your girlfriend to sign. That's what I've heard.

    Did this recently.
Just go in and provide the VIN, they will basically give you the old registration with the old owners name printed on it. By signing you are stating that you are in lawful possession/ownership of the vehicle.

If it's 1990 or older you may be interested in the 'antique auto' registration class (I did this on two of mine). One-time fee of $35 or so, and continuous registration (fleet sticker).

If its EVER been registered in ab you dont have to do anything special... any bill of sale works as long as the title is clear. You don't even need a safety for insurance. If it hasn't been registered... then you will need an oop and might need a new vin depending on age of the bike (old vins are not long enough)

I'll be honest I didn't realize this was in the bike chat, but I don't believe there would be an exception as the wording is 'vehicle' nothing MC-specific.

    Antique
Permits licensing of vehicles at least 25 years old and only operated as a collector’s item in exhibitions, club activities, parades and transportation to and from these activities.
    (d) “antique motor vehicle” means a motor vehicle that is not used as general transportation, is 25 years old or older, is owned as a collector’s item and is driven or operated only in exhibitions, club activities, parades or similar events;
    [quote]

    Antique motor vehicle
57(1) The owner of a motor vehicle who intends to drive it as an antique motor vehicle shall apply for registration of the vehicle as an antique motor vehicle and give the Registrar, in addition to the information required under section 53, information that satisfies the Registrar that
    (a) the motor vehicle is an antique motor vehicle, and
    (b) the motor vehicle is not used for general transportation.
    (2) Subject to section 65, the Registrar shall not transfer an antique motor vehicle certificate of registration to another vehicle.
    (3) A person shall not use a motor vehicle registered as an antique motor vehicle as general transportation.
    (4) An antique motor vehicle may only be
    (a) used as a collector’s item for transportation to and from and for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades or similar events, or
    (b) driven to and from a garage or service station for repairs or servicing.
    and the best part:

167(1) On the request of a peace officer, a person driving or
otherwise having the care or control of a motor vehicle or trailer
shall produce to the peace officer for inspection the following
documents as requested by the peace officer:

    (c) the subsisting financial responsibility card issued in
    respect of that motor vehicle;

    (5) Subsection (1)(c) does not apply in respect of a motor vehicle
    that
    (a) is registered in a jurisdiction other than Alberta,
    (b) is registered only as an antique motor vehicle, or
    (c) is owned by the Crown.

An antique has to be all original though... so no cafe/scrambler/tracker/bobber builds

I've briefed the regs pretty thoroughly on this one, and you can mod your antique. They just don't want to see x chassis, y motor, and z registration. I think Chip Foose got dinged for building brand new cars and selling them with old vins as 'antiques'. And 'club activities or similar events' can include track days.

perhaps its more on the insurance side, but there was something about even having to have OEM sized tires

Not true. Even if a bike has been registered it can fall out of the registry in which case they have no way to track it and then you need a OOP inspection done it.

I have gone through this myself.
