ya you can still drive down there after 6pm it's shared by cars, bikes and peds.Originally posted by sexualbanana
I don't get why they had to paint/install bike lanes on Stephen Ave. Does that mean I can't drive through on evenings anymore?

Define "packed" haha. I walked down 12th ave for almost 20 minutes just after 8 AM today and saw only a handful of cyclists, some of which did not look like commuters. That lane will never even be remotely close to "packed". 10th ave always has more bikes than 12th, because it's faster and has almost no lights.
ozz my godzzz. bicyclesssssssss.
angry or happy, its all here for the year. ozz my godzz
No one bikes in Calgary though! Must have been a hipster convention

That is pretty well consistent with my daily 12th ave experience.Originally posted by Maxt

Its sad that somehow this thread doesn't even break the top 2 pages on google when you search for 12th ave cycle track.
I blame the bicycle illuminati...

12th is definitely quieter. I still don't get that one. 10th ave is kind of a dump that barely has sidewalks, bike lanes and proper sidewalks would have been an upgrade. I think it's because 2 way streets are more successful retail streets, and retailers complain about losing their parking spots, so they are trying to shift retail to 10th and make 12th a commuter road.
They should have just put the bikes on 10th and converted 12th and 11th to 2 way.
5th street is busy with bikes though. People going E/W any long distance use the river path. People going N/S have nothing but terrifying busy streets as options, until now, so lots of people are diverting to 5th it seems.
are you being sarcastic? like said, it really is a hipster convention haha.Originally posted by msommers

I tried the bike lanes out after the east village block party on thursday
Hudsons was setting up their stampede display shit and backed up 12th for 4-5 intersections this morning. It says no parking but if you throw on the hazards I guess you can park!
^^^oh ya man didn't you know that, all you gotta do is put on hazards and you can park wherever the hell you want.
That's been happening in Chinatown for decades

I haven't read through the entire thread, but it seems like a lot of people here are against the 12 Avenue Cycle Track. I cannot stress the importance of voicing your concerns by calling 311 or even your area Councillor if you do not like the Cycle Track. It is a pilot project and if they hear from enough people, they might scrape the project after this trial is over. So far, the City thinks the pilot project is a success.
You can't honestly think this pilot project would end any other way then as a success?Originally posted by cloud7

Took the 12 Ave one yesterday for the first time. Overall pretty good but fuck I had 2 pedestrians just walk out in front of me (middle of the block not intersection). And some guy on a longboard...
If it was my design, I'd concentrate more on roads having bigger usable shoulders (can be used for EMS/busted vehicles in the winter too). The cycle lane works but it's still really risky with all the left turning across the paths.
I almost got run over on the sidewalk yesterday from people not even using the bike lane (I can only assume that is their way of protesting?)
Also I see they blacked out the cycle lane on 10th ave, which has stopped exactly nobody from biking there, since it's a far superior route than 12th ave.
The City is pretty clearly trying to push users to the cycle track, lassimmon has said it, they will do everything possible to claim a success for this pilot.Originally posted by Mitsu3000gt
