    Default Honda Grom

    Beyond,

Came back from a recent trip to Japan and seeing how most locals get around on zippy little scooters, has led me to think of getting one myself - more specifically, a Honda Grom. However, by me not seeing many scooters around yyc on my daily commutes, I was wondering what are other people's thoughts on how a scooter (in this case, mini bike) fits in with the yyc vehicle crowd.

Is the the city of Calgary so much different from Japan (weather and road condition wise) that a scooter isn't feasible? Should I save my money and stick with a car or save up more for a more practical bike (i.e., 500cc+)? And finally, will I get crucified riding such a pansy looking bike (although I shouldn't care what others think, but isn't that a point of a forum, to get feedback)?

I've never ridden nor do I know how to ride any type of motorcycles with more than one gear also but willing to learn regardless.

Any feedback (good or bad) is appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

Pictures of the Grom, stock and with minimal mods.

I bought a grom to commute on so I could put less mileage on my cbr600rr. It doesn't have much top end, but as long as you're staying under 80 or under 60 uphill you're fine. I found I was having issues on one road and swapped the front sprocket to get more pep uphill. I top out at 95kph now.

It's cheap to own, cheap to insure, cheap to mod. I get 100mpg consistently. But you still need a bike license to ride it. Everyone loves it, riding it, seeing it. I can't really pipe up in regards to a scooter, but a 250cc scooter would do great in Calgary and be fine on pretty much any road. But then you'd look like a pansy.

If you want to see my grom in person, we can arrange that. I just don't want to drive it across Calgary. I do use it to commute from Evanston to downtown.

I like it. A nice commuter bike if you avoid Deerfoot. Peppy enough to get around town. Can't speak on the gas mileage though as I just test drove a friends

I think minimum you'd want if you plan to ever leave the core would be 30hp.. which puts you in the 300cc range... also gets you sitting up a little higher in traffic which is never a bad thing with all our lifted trucks

Don't own one yet but just like a ruckus it's not about the speed it's a thing to ride and break necks. Once my ruck build is done the grom is next

Ya the Grom isn't a scooter, it is classified as a bike and you do need a bike license for it. I met a guy in Airdrie with one, tuner and sproket he said it would do 120-140 which seems good enough for a commuter any where in Calgary.

They look badass with an extended swing arm too.

But how tall are you? I'm 6'1" and i had the entire showroom at Rocky Mountain Honda laughing when i sat on one. No way anyone 6' tall could ride those.

I sat my 6'5" buddy on mine. I'm 5'11". I know a few 6'2"-6'3" guys on instagram that ride these things.

It "would" do 120-140. Downhill. I can barely hold 80 along nose hill, with a smaller sprocket and full exhaust. I don't have a tuner, because I couldn't justify $400 USD for an extra hp or two, "maybe".

Ya this one i saw was fairly modified no doubt. I always wondered what they would do stock for top speed. 80k is really low, i can do low 70's on my ruckus (flat ground, no hills lol)

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

I do fully expect to get a Class 6 license at some point and I would think learning on a Grom would be a good start should I commit to it. Can you do the road test on this thing?

I'm a fairly small guy (about 5'8") so hopefully I won't look that disproportional to the bike when I go take a closer look.

If I do commit (more likely now after the feedback), I would plan to mod it to the point where I get the most out of it and considering I live in the hilly NW of Calgary, any extra oomph is greatly appreciated.

Knowing that Smurf is able to commute to DT from Evanston with no issues sets me at ease. Thanks for the offer to take a closer look by the way, but I should be ok for now.

The fastest I hit on it was 101km/h downhill.
I can do 95km/h on flat ground with the new sprocket.

I got mine from Adventure Honda/Pro-Am (Mcknight + Edmonton Trail) since I'm in the NW. Great sales dept, shit parts/service dept.

    EDIT:
This is my 6'5" buddy on it.

If this is your first/only bike I'd probably recommend going up to a 250/300. Far more capable for not much more money. This isn't Cali or Italy or Japan where having the smallest bike possible affords you any advantages. If your only bike restricts you to 90km/h roads and lower, you're either going to replace it quickly or buy another bike on top of it.

I rode one two up on the highway at 110 KM/h!

These things are fun as hell and when I rented it in Van, I got a lot of attention. Fun little bike.
