Default Anyone use reliable OCR software? (Converting image to text)

Anyone use any reliable (free) software that can read characters from images and converts it into text? Doesn't matter if it's Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Long story short, I'm working with an idiot who thinks it's easier to send me screencaps of MD5 and SHA-1 hashes than copying and pasting them. Normally I'd argue back, but he's taken a month to order an SSL certificate so he's probably right.

I use Adobe acrobat, but you have to convert to pdf and it's not free obviously.

Use google drive. I just tested it by making a notepad note which read:

"This is a test of google drives ability to convert a jpeg image into text."

I then screen capped just the text portion of the above file, saved it to a jpeg file called "google_ocr_test.jpeg", uploaded the jpeg file to google drive, and finally updated google drives settings to automatically convert to google doc format by checking "Convert Uploads".

A couple of seconds later a newly converted google docs file appeared beside the jpeg file. Upon opening, I confirmed that new file was in fact an OCR rendered text representation of the original image with selectable text.

I'd vote for him. America may have a black guy, but we'd have captain fucking Kirk.
