So ideally, I'd lower the hitch an inch or two, and tighten the WD bars a bit.

That hitch is a real pain to lower, so I haven't bothered.
With approx. 900lbs of tongue weight, the front of the truck definitely looks a little high but if it feels just fine while towing, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Reposting this helpful little GIF video that Dave put up, since it is very relevant to this discussion. Shows the effect that poor distribution can have on sway.

I've been arguing for a long time that proper weight distribution is the FIRST and most important form of swan control, long before any device that attaches to your hitch, or any truck-based anti-sway system.

Saw this absolute GEM today at the sani-dump in sylvan lake. I first noticed it because it's the newer, longer, nicer version of my trailer. That's a Jayco JayFLight 28BHBE. Nice trailer, dry weight of around 7000 lbs and GVW of 9250 lbs. Being pulled by a Nissan Armada, which if my google-fu is correct CAN have a trailer rating of up to 9000 lbs. Apparently not all Armadas had the load leveling rear air suspension, and without it the rating was much lower. Or if it isn't working right. I don't know what the situation here is, but this is a great example of too big of a trailer, too small of a tow vehicle, improperly distributed load, improperly adjusted weight distribution hitch or more likely, all four at once. Bet that thing was scary as hell on the highway.

Anyway, stay safe friends. Don't be like this guy.

That is pitiful! i see so many tools like that though on the way to bc through the radium/Windermere area. It's no wonder BCers think we're idiots.....

Thanks for posting this info. I decided this year to get a truck and have a family trailer at my disposal so some of this info will come in handy.

That's about as much of a trailer as I would comfortably tow with my truck. That Armada is seriously overweight in EVERY aspect, and is quite literally an accident waiting to happen. And yeah, the WD hitch is not set up properly, but it would probably be on the verge of snapping if it was. There is nothing about that set up that is smart. At all.

^^ That would probably be fine if the truck was turned around in that picture so that more of the weight was over or behind the axles on that trailer.

Could probably use a hitch with a drop as well I would think. Trailer looks almost level with the rear of the truck sagging

ok, what does he have under the tarp. There is no way that trailer has more than a few hundred pounds of TW.

I think it's a combination of overloaded trailer (see how low far up the trailer wheel is), and overloaded cargo space. Nothing like blowing by your GVWR in the name of camping!

Here is a good one parked in my hood. Classic case if too much load, and not too much trailer. Bet this thing handles frighteningly with the front axle unloaded like that.

That might be ok if he was actually using a WD hitch. but if you are gonna carry a quad and tow like that, you should be installing air bigs over the rear axle.

Suspect there's no way to do that and be within truck specs on a 1500. How much does that quad weigh? Has to be 700 lbs with fuel etc. He has a couple tools and rams beside the quad in the bed too. Let's say 800 lbs, then minimum 500 lbs tongue weight. Maybe if he has no passengers or luggage in the truck...

I'm a big fan of half tons, but use the right truck for the application. Guys who want to do this should be in 3/4 or 1 ton rigs.

Although yeah, WDH and air bags would be a big help.

that trailer looks similar to one that a friend of mine owns. his is about 4000lbs loaded so tongue weight should be less than 500lbs (no WDH needed). add in the estimated weight of the quad and you're at 1300lbs.

my last F150 had 1800lbs of payload so he could be under GVWR but i bet his rear axle is close to overloaded. a WDH would help with that.

Ram trucks are notorious for low payloads as well.

honestly if you are going to toy-haul, buy a toy hauler

if you're going to pull a trailer and quads, you need a sled deck and a 3/4 ton and bigger

Or outside of BC, a 5er and utility trailer.

So I am pretty new to this towing thing. I picked up this used but new to the family pop up. Hooked it up a few days ago and everything seems to be okay. Just wanted to know how it looks by the picture on the way it sits.

Looks decent, kind of a crappy picture though. One thing you can do to help your piece of mind is to take it to the CAT scales and find out how much it really weighs when fully loaded. I think your van is rated for 3500 lbs towing, so I'm sure you are under that. Have you been on any trips yet? How does it handle? I don't know much about tent trailers, I assume it's go brakes, are they working well? DO you feel like you are getting pushed when trying to stop?
