Default Looking for a hit and run suspect.

Cross posting from a friend of a cousin on facebook.

Truck hit the guy so hard, the truck broke his mirror off

I wanted to see if I could get some help from the hive mind that is social media, earlier today on my bike commute home from work at about 4:40pm I was hit by a truck from behind at a red light on Mcleoud and 15th Ave SE across from Alpha House, where I was knocked over my handlebars and into the middle of the road.

The truck which I think was a newer blue Ford F-150 then decided it would be a responsible idea to drive off as fast as possible and leave me in the middle of the road on back. The driver then ran through the next set of lights at 17th Ave where it looked like a red light camera snapped a picture. I'm hoping that the camera caught a picture of this irresponsible driver but I'm still waiting to hear back from the Calgary Police Service about it.

The truck also left behind the mirror that I was struck from behind with as well so hopefully that can identify the truck that hit me.

Yes I am okay and not in the hospital thankfully, I'm home with my loving wife, I just ended up with a scraped elbow and hand, and a sore shoulder. Just a little shaken up by the events too.

There were lots of witnesses at the accident, but no one happened to catch the license plate number of the truck. If you could please share this post hopefully someone who was there might have seen the license plate number as well, If the red light camera didn't already capture it, and please report it to the police at 403-264-1234

Also a big thank you to all the friendly people that stopped to make sure I was okay and helped me out.

So the guy was on a bicycle and was hit by the side mirror of the truck? Do I have that right?

That's messed up. Don't most truck mirrors fold in on impact like that? Wouldn't the bike & truck have to be extremely close to each other for contact to happen?

Could have been a telescoping mirror, but still be pretty close

I can never understand why some people's first reaction is to flee. Usually the "punishment" for an accident is quite small, if anything, and in today's age you've got to be shitting bricks for months on end that somebody grabbed your plate.

Even with that, when you plunk a cyclist, shouldn't the mirror simply fold in? How did it snap off?

Hmmm maybe it was a base model truck with no folding mirror option.

pretty much. I got nailed by one of those in the sobeys parking lot. stumbled me, but it definitely folded in.

Makes me wonder if there isn't more to this.

More importantly how does one fly over the handle bars after getting by this mirror?

    Was he illegally weaving traffic?

Just to play devils advocate...Most wing mirrors only pivot horizontally and break off quite easily with any vertical or diagonal hit (as I found out the hardway moving a recycling bin past my car). If the mirror hit the cyclist's back, which would be angled at say 45 deg, it could have been enough to break it off. Although both the F150 standard and telescoping tow mirrors are pretty beefy compared to your typical car wing mirror...so

Well, I imagine if you were sitting/standing stationary on your bike and a fixed arm (more or less) on a several thousand pound moving vehicle hit you it would have a good chance of knocking you forward and/or over the bars. No?
