If he can't stay up with the Flames awful goaltending why would someone claim him and keep him on their NHL roster all year?

He could easily get claimed. A young goalie with lots of potential failed to bail the team out when left to flounder behind our dumpster-fire of a defense at the start of the year?

A team like Florida could easily have claimed him, they don't have much in the way of a goalie pipeline and their backup is Al Montoya. Florida, Boston, and Montreal with the Price injury last night all seemed like they could claim him.

Scouts see a lot. They don't just show up for games they also hang around at practices.

Scouts see Ortio leaning on the net instead of readying up on odd man drills, scouts see Ortio being one of the first ones off the ice, scouts also see that when you boil down his experience he has been far from stellar and really has only impressed in 4 NHL games.

Everyone instantly goes back with rose coloured glasses to how he played last year in that small stretch, a stretch where his save percentage was .908 (worse then all other flames goalies last year FYI as Ramo posted a .912 and Hiller a .918)

To think another NHL team was going to claim him and keep him other active NHL roster (which they would have to) was a bit of a stretch, not impossible by any means but a stretch.

Montreal has Condon and Tokarski, Tokarski struggled this year in his one game but his body of work is well known from last season.
Boston has Rask and Gustavsson, Gust has a .920 save percentage which is pretty good for a backup and miles above Ortio's numbers.
Florida with Luongo and Montoya isn't that bad. Montoya is also at .920 this year and has looked good with a 2.39 GA. For the pipeline Brittain, Montembeault and Cowley are all decent goaltending prospects so I think saying they don't have much would be a stretch considering two of those guys carried their teams last season.

As you can see, all the teams you mentioned have more capable backups then Ortio currently in their system and would be taking a step back by bring him in and replacing one of their active roster goaltenders. Ortio's NHL save percentage is .893 and that is not a number that will have GM's chomping at the bit to take a flyer on.
