Picked up the Pivos XIOS XS on sale from Memory Express for $80.

It's not the best, but a decent price for a pre-installed Kodi player if you wanna check it out.

I don't believe it will do 1080P netflix but its still pretty decent quality. Definitely not SD
I run Netflix from it on a 120" projector and it looks fine to me.

If your up in the NW and want to check it out PM me

    is this possible to do?

have an external HD connected to one of the usb ports on my modem. that stores movies that i download from my main PC. That can be watched using the minix in my Bedroom? obviously all on the same network.

That's possible to do. Before I had a NAS I use to play all my movies off an external hard drive off my router.

Ya, you'll need something with decent power. i.e. not a fire TV, rpi, nexus player, apple TV...etc. Not only do these devices not have enough power to handle the big files, most of them have driver support issues with DTS and 24P playback.

Look into something running windows or linux.

I like windows because it's familiar and has good driver support, but it also costs an extra $100 on top of your hardware. The kodibuntu build is free if this is going to be an issue.

Check out the new intel NUC's with skylake class processors.

Or just grab a uITX motherboard and build your own box.

Edit - for reference, I've tried them all. For me, the windows box is by far the best experience I've had with kodi. And i'm similar to you - watching 10GB movies w/ DTS. I stream everything from my NAS on a gigabit network.

This is another option. its out of stock right now. but Kodi can be side-loaded from a memory stick.

If you don't plan to every watch bluray discs linux is a cheap alternative for setting up a HTPC but be warned that it may not always work that great out of the box and may take some tweaking.

I prefer Windows over linux though for HTPC purposes and its just easier to manage and work with.

The pipo has been benched against the minix and it beat it in almost every category. The only problem with this box is that you can't get it locally and the support sucks for it.

Otherwise it's a great box for the money. I haven't read any reviews about the dual boot one but I'm assuming it's going to have the same problem as all the other window's boxes in that there's shit all for storage

I run a Asus gaming laptop for my kodi player. It plays the 1080p with no lag . Plus a wireless keyboard, I control it from the bed.

I have had the Xios DS for quite a while. Very laggy when running Kodi in android, Netflix was also unwatchable. Kodi is better if you flash the Linux version. The box starts up right into Kodi. Menus and navigation are still a slow but it does play without any sync issues.
