Default Surprised by Save-On Foods. Re: Grades of Beef.

Went to grab some steaks at Save-On today, and naturally went to the butcher counter and grabbed a couple of nice Strips...noticed some AAA's on the packaged area as being a lot cheaper per KG...
I asked why, and she says "everything behind the glass is "CANADA PRIME"!!! I had no idea Save On carries Prime!!!!

Also a little tip: there's a section on the shelves right beside the butcher counter, and they're packaged as AAA...when in fact they're two day-old cuts of Prime that didn't sell right away!!

    Now you know!!!

Save On meat is far better than any other store in Calgary.

Try the 28 day aged cuts at Co-op and you may change your mind. They will cost you $10+ per steak, but oh so good. My baby boy with no teeth was able to eat it.

My steaks average around $15-25 per steak. And 28 day is no comparison to Prime grade beef. Prime used to be only available to 5 star steak houses and high end restaurants.
*edit* actually I'll take that back. I haven't actually tried their 28-day stuff, so I'll reserve judgement. I imagine they're aging AAA cuts? What is it per/KG compared to the same cut as non-aged?

These strips I got today were $42/Kg.

The 28 day at co-op are AAA. They're pretty decent, close to Prime. It's just really hard to find Prime cuts in stores, it seems to come and go depending on when they get them in, so very hit and miss.

Speaking of good steaks, Costco has been out of that Australian Wagyu for weeks now. Even drove around to the different Costcos through the city looking for it with no luck. And Costco being Costco nobody knows WTF I'm talking about when asking for a status update on when they're getting more.

Do you know if you could get a brisket there or any kind of smoking meat?

Yeah I was surprised the other day when I went to Save On by my parents place in Panorama and saw Prime. I have terrible memory so I don't know how pricing compared to co-op's dry aged or Costco's Prime.

I have not seen either the prime grade or the aussis wagyu at costco lately. Looked at costco.com by mistake, they have japanese wagyu, not kobe, 136 bucks a pound.

I used to buy Save On tenderloins only. Went to Safeway on 130th and it's a better tenderloin for sure. Try it.

Safeway meat blows chunks. Usually over priced and a crap quality. Its a last resort shop for me.

I don't like tenderloin at all. Ribeye, porterhouse or Strip.

For those that like beef and eat it often, why aren't you buying in bulk from local ranches?

Well if you ensured your meat was packed and transported properly, freezer burn shouldn't be an issue for a while.
