Question, for those who are upset about noise issues being enforced do you classify yourself as:

    A) It’s my god given right to rev my car/bike up and down 17th

    B) The science is wrong so I’m going to yell at clouds on the internet

    C) The reving isn’t that bad / I like listening to it

    D) It’s a slippery slope and just part of the war on cars and they are going to hand out tickets to my stock Camry because they don't like the color of my skin or something like that

My take? As someone who both uses and drives down 17th on the regular…

The reving of Harley’s for sure is pretty damn annoying. It’s probably against any number of traffic codes / bylaws. If people are being asshats they should probably be ticketed, seems like a stupid tax I can get behind.

Could my stock car break the noise limit? Ya probably. But I would also probably have to be an obnoxious twat to set it off. And I am in full control over how loud my car is. I’d say this goes for most people, even bikes.
    e) The Government is incompetent and I don't want them wasting even more tax $$'s on stupid shit that isn't well thought out.

This primarily, but also I just don't give a fuck so much what people do with their cars and bikes being loud. I am bothered more by stupid people talking beside me than riding past me.

Another release about the snare but now they have some information of how they will enforce levels https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...noise-vehicles

The changes would prohibit vehicles from emitting sound that exceeds 92 decibels when measured by a sound meter at a distance of 50 centimetres from the exhaust outlet when the vehicle is idling, or anything over 96 decibels when measured from the same distance while the vehicle is moving.

Most vehicles that exceed those decibel levels have typically modified their mufflers or exhaust systems, Pleckaitis noted.

Administration also recommended replacing the existing fine structure for causing objectionable noise with a $270 violation ticket.
96dB at idle at a distance of 20 inches.

So... they're admitting this might catch some entirely stock vehicles, the exact same problem they ran into last time around?

Yeah tons of stock vehicles will not pass those sound regulations. I think my dad’s car with the original exhaust and the Supertrapp on it wouldn’t even pass that.

96dB at 50cm is the equivalent of 66dB at 10 meters. How do we distinguish exhaust sound from tire, air movement and other? I think in the right environmental circumstances almost ever road going car will emit a combination of noise that’s 66dB at 10m from the tires, engine, exhaust etc combined.

Auto x sound rules are 93dB at 50 feet from the edge of the course and many stock performance vehicles can’t meet that.

No mention of speed or RPM makes this open to a lot of interpretation. 1km/hr while idling in drive is "moving". Hell coasting in neutral is also "moving"

They’re using the same levels Toronto uses. But yea, it’s def lower than the transport Canada levels for new cars. For reference TC has a max 82db limit at 7.5m, which works out to 105.5db at 50cm. So yea lots of potential stock car fails.

My highly precise dB meter app on my phone measured 87 pretty much right at my exhaust outlet. So... good?

96dB is 8x louder than 87dB, so your phone can be horrendously inaccurate and you'd still be okay. I wouldn't worry.

What about the popping on deceleration that is prevalent among many makes these days. I know my stock BMW in Sport mode does it. A neighbourhood Merc & Subie both do it too, at least as loud as at the gun range.

In the turbo era that’s pretty well the only noise most modern cars can make lol

FYI, interpreted/perceived audio/noise doesn’t follow the typical 3dB doubling. ~10dB difference is required to “double the loudness”. Either way, should be fine for this case, just with less overhead.

What would be curious to know is what measurement weighting is used on to determine the SPL at any of these traps (whether z-weighted/unweighted which accounts for the entire frequency range, or c-weighted which focuses on the range that human ears/brain are most sensitive to). Measuring that close to exhaust exit will reduce amount of ambient noise contributing to measurements, but that close to the exhaust will also include some pressures in INAUDIBLE ranges. Think bass subs, where you feel the music more than actually “hear” it. Imagine getting ticketed for “community noise pollution” for something that can’t even be heard ha ha.

Well they have made more changes https://globalnews.ca/news/10838568/...vehicle-bylaw/

    This should end up entertaining:
In a unanimous vote on Monday, city councillors approved bylaw changes that include a new definition of “objectional noise” as any sound from a vehicle that “annoys or disturbs any reasonable person.”

That noise could include squealing tires, modified parts, an amplified stereo or a car alarm lasting for more than a minute.

Can we add a bylaw for any sound from a councillor that “annoys or disturbs any reasonable person.”?

Essentially unenforceable in this city. There are no "reasonable" people left.

What's nice is to have laws that are hard to understand or vague, and place a burden of interpretation onto law enforcement.
