Default Blacklisted Iphone - Paperweight or can be used as ipod only?

Long story short, my son bought an iphone 5s off some guy he didn't know for $150 as a replacement for his HTC one until he can buy out another phone. The iphone is blacklisted, so he can't use it at all.

Not looking to find out how to un-blacklist it, unfortunate lesson learned for him and I understand what a blacklisted phone is, clearly it must've stolen.

He's also prolly going to report it to the cops, he has the other person's info. Not sure what the cops can do, have never been through this before, but I just want to know if he can at least use it as a ipod or is it a paperweight now if he ends up being stuck with the phone.

    Thanks!!!

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

not sure how a black listed phone works but if he can open it and open apps and such I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work as just an ipod

Why doesn't he try to return it to the original owner? It's a lesson for him unfortunately, but at least he can get some good karma out of it.

This; the phone has an owner and it's not your son...

Phones are easy to unlock nowadays. You can go to multiple places in the city that will do an iPhone for $20-40.

You can't unlock a blacklisted/stolen iPhone. The IMEI block is at the provider level, only way to unblock it is for the provider to remove it off the list, and the only person that can do that is the original owner who reported the phone stolen in the first place.

The only way to activate the phone would be on an overseas carrier because the blacklists aren't shared.

U can use it as an iphone like u suggested, sell it overseas (or send to relatives) if u want since its not blacklisted in asia, but the best option would be to surrender it to the police or try to get it back to the owner. $150 is a cheap lesson to teach ur son

How would we track down the original owner?

The plan is to reach out to CPS and hand over the phone and contact info of the person who sold the phone. If CPS doesn't do anything or pick up the phone, then we're stuck with it. Hence why I inquired on whether it can be used as an ipod then. I was not aware you can track down the original owner, I am not proficient with apple products whatsoever. If we can track down the original owner for them to do whatever they want with it, then sure. I'm all for the good karma, so no issues there.

    Thanks for the feedback.

You can take it to the apple store and turn it in there, they will contact the original owner.

you cannot unblacklist a phone imei btw. so this advice isn't going to work for him. think of a car having a salvage title, same thing but irreversable and dishonest

You can change the actual sin of the phone which makes it virtually new. I've had it done to a blacklist Rogers phone before. Not sure of the exact details but it worked after.

Not on any iPhone made in the last several years if it has icloud locked. The phone is a brick.

I love the holy-er than thou attitude in this thread... you guys are all dicks, it's a kid, who saved up $150 to buy an iphone, and got fucked... yeah sure it's stolen and someone else lost it too, but this kid did nothing wrong, and is gonna get fucked for $150 because of it?

$150 is a lot of scratch for a kid.. to just give that away because of someone ripping him off really sucks. I don't see anybody here offering to help get the kid a phone that works so he can "do the right thing"

if he stole it and it got blacklisted, then yeah, fuck him, teach him a lesson, but he's just and innocent kid who got screwed.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

    Except you're completely wrong.

The use of the phone is not only condoning benefiting from someone elses stolen property, but it's a CRIMINAL OFFENCE FFS!
