Default Someone explain to me the current gas prices in and around YYC.

OK, this has got me fucking boggled. I know the price per L of gas changes across the country, and even across a city as big as Calgary, but recently, there are some HUGE swings in prices!

For example, in and around my house in Coventry, Gas prices are 100.4/L right now. Costco in Beacon Hill was 99.4/L. That was strange, usually Costco is about $0.06/L cheaper than most...I stopped there as we headed out to Banff.

When we get out to Dead man's flats, I notice the station there is 117.4/L I know they usually are charging a premium there, but 17 cents a liter? holy fawk! But guess what? Canmore and Banff were at the same prices...

I am driving around the city, and I am seeing gas prices all around the 107-110/L mark depending on the station...

So what the fuck gives? Why is there such a price disparity in a relatively small geographical area? It can't fucking cost 17 cents a liter more to ship to Canmore...

    WTF?

    Mind boggling

The other day while driving down McKnight by Center St or is it 4th? Petro and Shell were 109 while Esso on the the opposite side was 105? While Esso in Marlborough was 101

Less choice in Canmore. Where else are you going to go and fill up? Prices have always been 10-15 cents more per litre in Canmore for as long as I can remember as well. Banff and Lake Louise are even more expensive! No idea what the transport costs are to Banff/Canmore though.

For Calgary, I fill up at the same spot every time as they are usually very competitive. Beyond that, I don't check whether the place down the street is 5c/L cheaper as I don't see the value in wasting time trying to figure it out on some app or driving around in circles.

Man, my memory says that the Husky at dead mans flats were about 5 cents more a L than in calgary, and canmore banff were about 3 cents more than calgary.

But in even just a 2 min circle from my house, gas prices can differ by 10 cents/L...WHY?

I bet my Petro station four blocks away is at the upper numbers for Calgary. The station is known for high prices as it is in a very good location with zero competition and foolish with money types.

Look up Victoria, BC, it's at 1.28 for regular right now. I'm just thrilled my current car does not need premium. Looking into getting a Volt for the urban driving and possibly a diesel wagon for road trips.

I hate buying fuel, I know that can't be a thing as everyone dislikes going to a gas station. I see it as a time waste and a weekly expense which will never end at the current pace of thinking. I did the math, if I had a Volt over the last year, I'd still be on the original tank of fuel. My current urban vehicle will be the last non alternative fuelled vehicle I ever drive day to day in the city.

Make a stop at Sask River Crossing if you want to be mind boggled. Regular was 1.60 a few weeks back (no, I didn't put a drop in).

Costco has been on a price war for the last few months.

Out here on the west end, prices are always 5-10 cent higher than stations around Costco.

Look at Gasbuddy. There is a price depression around all the costcos.

Golden, BC is at 130.9 for regular. Wow!

I could believe that, but Coventry isn't that close to a Costco, anout smack dab in the middle between Cross Iron and Beacon Hill. And that sure doesn't fly when Marlborogh is 101 and a few blocks away it is 107... I just don't get the price disparity...

and I am trying to keep this thread AB only, as tax regimes change when you start going out of province.

I live downtown but still find excuses to go to the safeway in Crowfoot. Gas is usually 7-10c cheaper up there, and throw in those gas coupons and the drive is worth it

I know, and without bringing in the cost of a BBL or oil, why is the North end of the city is sitting about $1/L but as soon as you go south of 16th ave, it averages about $1.08/L...

Seriously, I don't fucking get it.

Do gas station owners have to abide by some sort of pump price regulation?

If not, then they can charge whatever they deem fit.

Yeah, regional offices tell them what to set their prices at.

Or at least that was how it worked when I worked at a petro can. I had to watch the Shell and Esso price boards and if they changed to something different, I had to phone some number and let them know, and then they would authorize me to change the pump prices to match. Worked the other way too. I would get a call and be told to lower/raise pump prices from the office.

    The owners had zero input.

    may have changed though.

I use Costco all the time...average 5-6 cents cheaper per litre. Usually 7-8 cents per litre cheaper on premium, which my Subaru requires*. According to GasBuddy, Premium is 18 cents more expensive at Shell, just 2 blocks from Costco in Okotoks. If you're trying to keep my business, Costco; it's working.
