On the more expensive end I really like the Audi RS7 or the S7. Heck if you wanted better fuel economy you could get the 3.0 tdi in the A7 which gives you 309hp and 479ft/lbs with a tune.
The V60 T6 R or the polestar are also amazing looking cars with good reviews. The only drawback is the lack of paddle shifters on the R but apparently the polestar has them. I think the Volvo interior is pretty nice too.
Lastly I would also go for a Golf R. This is probably the best car out there that meets your needs and is a true hatchback with car ride height unlike a gla45 which has an suv stance. Great initial reviews and lots of those reviewers are saying that it feels like it has a lot more power than advertised. Great VW interior as well.

Considering the OP is asking for tons of power to pass people driving 80mph up a mountain, I'd say my comments on needing more power than a Golf R or a GLA45 are justified.

I think we should do a hill climb road test, timing a bunch of cars accelerating up a steep hill from 80-100mph so that we can knock this thread back into reality on how much power you actually need.

Let's evaluate his first statement though. Soccer moms and grannies doing 80mph? Un-fucking-likely. The only time soccer moms speed is through playground zones. I'm willing to bet 60-80 is more relevant than 80-100.

He just wants the power so he can pass people like himself.

I never had any problems passing in my Sti, flew past cars like they were standing still. When you can go from 100km/h to 180km/h in ~ 10 seconds, that's plenty of passing power. Saying you need 400+ HP to do so comfortably sounds like an elitist.

Don't get me wrong, I've used a GTR to pass before and it's completely effortless. Takes no time at all...but I'm with Mibz on this one. Nobody needs 400HP to pass effectively, especially in a little hatch.

My vote goes to Golf R

I'll bring my wagon for 60-80 tests. We can use it as a benchmark.

To be fair, I never took a political stance in that debate. I'm an objective observer.

He's obviously not in Calgary. I'm guessing he's in the U.S. somewhere, maybe California where soccer moms and grannies are holding up traffic at 80mph, which is the norm.

Fixedgear, wanna clarify where you live please?

Seriously, am I the only one here that has driven up a mountain? Or is everyone ignoring the OPs requirements of high speed passing going up a steep ass hill?

If it's on a steep hill, the grade is going to affect everyone on the road. It's not like everyone has 400hp making passing impossible. OP just said he needs more than his current (presumbly low powered) 4 banger. I seriously doubt anyone would regularly have trouble passing people in a Golf R, steep mountain road or not.

If you are having trouble passing in your GLA45, it is probably your roof box.

    90% sure he's in Colorado.

Holy fuck lol. You're going to need more power passing someone going 80mph up a mountain than someone going 80mph on a flat road. So yes, the physics of needing more passing power only affects the person making the pass, assuming the guy in front has cruise set at 80mph.

Classic Mibz and Kenny trying to be "that Internet guy" haha.

We should probably discuss the effects of frontal area and drag coefficient as well as friction and driveline losses while we are at it...
