    Thief at Earl's

Saw this on the news. Looks like a doctor had his Bentley carjacked when he met the potential "buyer" at Earl's in Dalhousie.

It should be standard to take a photo of the driver and his license before letting the guy test drive. They photo copy licenses all the time at dealerships, and they likely have surveillance video so for private transactions this should be standard and accepted. If a buyer complains about it that should set off some red flags. I think taking some records would eliminate a lot of these bad deals.

Keep an eye out for the Bentley as I don't think they are that common around here!

Owner sounds like an idiot for considering legal action against Rogers and CPS.

I doubt he'd be able to get any money out of Rogers or the CPS, and he would lose more on attorney fees, but I think he's po'd that they weren't able to help him when they had the means to. Maybe he's putting that out there to try to change the system otherwise it will just happen to the next guy.

Imagine for one moment your vehicle got stolen and you had a trackable cell phone in it. The police and your cell company say sorry we gotta respect your privacy so we can't trace your phone's location. Does it make much sense?

I wonder if he told the police that his 4 year old was in the back seat with the cell phone whether that would have got the ball rolling. That would fall in the extreme circumstance category. He might have gotten in trouble with some mischief charge, but at least they'd track down the vehicle. I think the main thing that is bugging him is that the phone was easily trackable, but no one was willing to do it. Wouldn't you be a little peeved?

Really comes down to CPS has better things to do than track down someone's car. We can argue if that should be the case or not all day though...

I mean they are not going to track the car and tell you the address/location. So it just comes down to CPS doesn't care. Blaming Rogers is just hilarious... Why should they track down your device? That's just a legal quagmire for them.

Boggles my mind, what is the big deal to him, doesn't he have insurance? At the very worse, he'll have to pay a deductible, which I'd think is a measly amount to a doctor driving a $65,000 car?!

I have insurance and I don't care if my car is stolen, as long as my family and dogs are out of it. I'd be embarrassed to go to the media in this situation.

Owner should be sued for not buying an iPhone for his son.

Owner should be happy it got jacked. Instant sale at asking price. Or was he too cheap to buy comprehensive?

That was my first thought with it too, no hassle of trying to find some private buyer with 65k sitting around to buy your higher km used Bentley.

    This is a bs excuse.

If you want to make that argument, then the police shouldn't be bothering with traffic enforcement either, especially speeding tickets, or a lot of other things i guess.

Your car is gone. There's no active crime in progress so it's not like your high on the list of priorities. There's something like 4000 reported car thefts in Calgary per year. So that's about 11 or so per day. I don't think you are going to get much sympathy out of the cops on this one. Your car is just one among the many that ended up stolen. They will call you once it's recovered or has been used in the commission of some other crime but realistically the cops have better things to do with their time rather than trying to catch a petty thief.
