My car was stolen earlier this year. The police didn't even come to take a report. The surprising thing is that they called me 5 months later to tell me they had a suspect in custody based on prints found in the vehicle.

Sequence of events based on the Calgary Sun:

    1) They meet
    2) Anderson Jr in the back, Anderson Sr in the Passenger, Theif in the Driver's
    3) They drive around the lot
    4) Theif requests higher speeds, Anderson Sr suggests to swap seats with Jr based on his size
    5) Sr gets out, and is nearly driven over

Conclusion: Jr is still in the car.

    What a stupidly written article.

What is insurance like in a situation like this?

The owner willfully let the guy into the drivers seat. Is there some loophole an insurance company could take about this? Something about the owner assuming the risk by letting the guy take control?

It's still theft, still covered (assuming he had insurance on it). He wouldn't even be out his deductible because when a claim is made for either fire or theft of entire vehicle the deductible is waived. I don't know why this guy is all bent out of shape? Unless the proper market value is $50,000 and he was trying to sell for $65,000.

Owner should be happy it got jacked. Instant sale at asking price. Or was he too cheap to buy comprehensive?

Or the fact that Google has Device Manager for all Android devices as well to track them.

Seems to be inline of what's being asked on Autotrader.

I guess dude watched too much CSI and expected too much from CPS and Rogers.

You can't remotely turn Location on from Device Manager (assuming it's turned off). Samsung, Sony, etc. all have the ability though with their own software.

Guy losses his O&G job, needs money quick, not getting bites on the car, hires somebody to "steal" it?

Last thing I need is some total stranger running around with all of my personal information. That is a pretty quick way to get your identity stolen.
Do you think it's better to let some total stranger drive around in your car for sale without getting any personal information? That's a pretty quick way to get your car stolen or have yourself killed. Remember that guy who tried to sell his truck?

    Tim Bosma

I guess the seller could put a thumb over the Driver's License DOB and address if a buyer is concerned. I wonder if Tim would still be alive if his wife had some photos and a copy of a license?

I'm surprised there isn't more sympathy for the Bentley guy. I saw the news story on TV, and I just thought aw man that's awful to have happen to anyone. Imagine if it was a single mom / your sister / relative who was selling their Mazda3 for $5000 who nearly got run over and had their car stolen. Would you say she was an idiot for selling on Kijiji, tough luck for her, she was asking for it, no worries the insurance will cover it, etc?

I've seen lots of pricey cars advertised on Kijiji so I don't see why it's such a bad marketplace. Is everyone selling on Kijiji asking for trouble? Here's a Lambo:

    $152K Lambo

I don't blame the police in this situation as their hands are probably tied as they have to follow due process. They probably have come across many cases like this, and if the cell provider won't budge there's likely not much they can do. It's a flaw in the system.

But now imagine if that guy who stole the Bentley hit and killed a family member of yours crossing the road with the car going at 100 KPH in a 60 zone. You'd probably be a little upset that the system failed in this case. It happens all the time - I see news reports of punks stealing cars and end up crashing into innocent people.

There would probably be more sympathy for the guy if he didn't go full retard and blame CPS/Rogers. If that never came up, the thread would've gone in a completely different direction, such as "who cares he's rich he owns a Bentley" lol.

Why wouldn't they just track the phone themselves, I know android/apple have built in tracking

As for him not tracking the phone himself, I talked to this guy (owner of the bentley) in spring at the esso in edgemont while he was trying to fill up his ZR-1. He was struggling to use the pay-at-the-pump feature and cursing it out. No way he knows how to track his device with a computer.

I think I'd be pretty frustrated too if the cops and Rogers couldn't help out when they had the means to. I don't know. I've luckily never been in that sort of situation, but I wonder what I would have done if that happened.

I know the risks are pretty low of running into a bad sale, and it might be overkill for the average car sale to get ID and stuff. Maybe if you're selling a more expensive car it's something to consider as Calgary isn't as safe as it used to be. We never had home invasions and carjackings until recently that I know of. I don't know - I just think better safe than sorry I guess. Even one guy getting killed over a stupid truck sale is too much. The guy had a little kid and a wife...

So where do you take a stolen Bentley? Chop shop or ship out of country?
