Nah, just not a family thing to do on vacation IMO. Not sure if his kids appreciated it.

I posted this last year, so I'll just repost:

If you're driving down to Seattle from Vancouver, a real nice side trip is Whidbey Island. Turn West off I5 at hwy 20. Little seaside towns and some great history to explore. You can take the Clinton-Mukilteo ferry back to the mainland at the bottom of the Island and you're right back onto I5.

Can easily spend a few days if you want, or a few stops and do it in an afternoon. Great ice cream shops, seafood restaurants, and excellent B&B's if you want to spend a night. We made a full weekend out of just exploring the Island. The bridge at Deception Pass (first bridge you cross to get onto the island) is worth a stop to get out and take pictures. Amazing view. Fort Casey State Park is great place to stop for a picnic. Explore old ruins from the War. Fort Casey

Anyways...just thought I'd throw it out there.

Mukilteo is really nice if you just want to chill by the water. Fun personal (well connected) fact. My wife's grandfather and great-grandfather built the Mukilteo lighthouse!

    Oops! Corrected... Great-grandfather only...

Heading to Seattle on a one day trip. Just wondering what the border wait times (Blaine/Surrey) going into and leaving 'Murica are like on a typical weekday. Google maps says whole trip takes less than 3 hours.

Default Suggestions for things to do in Seattle..

Heading down for the weekend with the Wife on the 15th, any suggestions? Hotel is already booked, and staying in the downtown/Pikes area.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

Agree with the underground tour, was pretty neat. Disagree with first Starbucks, it's just a Starbucks. However there is an awesome Russian bakery next door to it. Both of them are across the street from Pike Place anyways, so I'm sure you'll see them.

SEATTLE UNDERGROUND IS A MUST R-Audi!

One of the coolest tours I’ve been on, and lots of interesting history.

    That’s my #1 suggestion.

    Seattle’s kind of boring.

    Indeed we do.

I will check into the Underground tour.

We ended up deciding on Seattle based on last minute travel cost/flight time/convenience.. worst case scenario its a quiet weekend away from the kids. Ended up booking at the W, as it seemed central and they are usually pretty consistent.

You are in luck, there are tons of amazing bars. Here are a few of the more memorable places I have visited canon, ZigZags, Rumba, Bathtub Gin.

    - Pike place market: on Saturday and Sunday it's nice to walk around. You'll see the first starbucks (nothing special about it,) people tossing fish, that Russian bakery and you can also do the underground tour (which was meh,) but a good place to spend half a day in
    - Starbucks Reserve in Capitol hill is really neat, it's a roastery and I go see it every time I am there
    - The Future of Flight in Everett, a must do if you have a car. Some 45 mins north of downtown Seattle. You will need to buy tickets in advance
    - The Museum of flight is okay, by Boeing field in Seattle, but must see if you like airplanes
    - Outlet malls outside of seattle are overrated
    - Shop around 5th and 6th Avenues
    - Bars, food, sushi

BIGGEST ADVICE: 5 degrees Celsius in Calgary is a lot warmer than 5 degrees Celsius in Seattle. That coastal air is bone chilling cold and you need to dress up well. And it may also be wet.

If you don't have a car you can take the train into downtown from the airport, don't waste your money on cab/uber, especially given that you will be stuck on I5 along the way.

Ivors for fish n chips and chowder. The Gum wall is cool yet gross. Pikes and the first SBs are a must. Bring comfy walking shoes.

Enjoy our gridlocked traffic and out of control homeless problem. 3rd between Pike and Pine!
