Just do a reservoir lap, then try and do it faster the next time. Repeat!
Lots of traffic these days though. I like the Chestermere pathway suggestion. It's super quiet and flat. Where in the city are you located? What are you trying to improve on your cadence? Are you clipped in, or on flat pedals? Is the goal to be smoother in your pedal stroke? Or you want to be able to spin a high cadence comfortably? Cadence drills (single leg spins if you're clipped in, high rpm ramp-ups) would be good.

Traffic is an important part of city riding training though... he is a ways out from throwing on the spandex and doing a hwy ride. Needs to focus on crushing DT sprints to the coffee shop

Complete n00b; flat pedals; right now my focus is to gain more average speed and not just keep spinning inefficiently. I'm DT

What kind of footwear do you all use when the commute is rainy like this past week? I've been soaked.

Thankfully Goretex jacket + Wetskins made the journey tolerable.

For cadence nothing really beats learning to ride on rollers... If you're learning how to ride on rollers make sure you record your first few attempts for posterity/hilarity.

I do most of my city riding, and coffee runs out to Cochrane from the NW on a fixed gear. Great for cadence, strength, and smoothing out the pedal stroke.
Either that or grab an set of old school power cranks - independent cranks, which really even things out in a hurry.....

I've had my SPD shoes for 7 years and ~15,000 KM and it's time to replace them. The biggest reason for this is the top straps on both shoes are splitting so it's no longer snug and secure when I'm pedaling. I was shopping around for shoes that use a boa but my friend said the boa on her shoes are starting to fray after 2 years, which I hadn't considered before.

What your guys' experience on the longevity of shoes that use boas?

Love boa shoes for snug fitment. Boa sells fairly inexpensive replacement laces and dials. I haven't had many issues with my boa shoes, and usually wear out the shoes well before the laces...

no problem with boa. they are a lot more convenient and streamline for bootie as compared to ratchet straps. I can't say much about longevity for daily use. I do have them for a few years now but I have a few pairs to rotate. Some brands do offer replacement parts if that's a concern.

I'll assume the BOA laces are the same in golf shoes and they work well. Nice fitting and can be replaced.

A redesign of the Checkpoint should be coming for 2022. T47 threaded BB and ISO speed upfront on the carbon models are the expected new features. Then maybe 650b and 700c tire support but who knows. I just hope Trek fixes the cable management. I can't stand how they zip tie the brake housing on a $2,700 bike.

I really like the Cannondale Topstone's. It's a little out of my price range but this lefty for sale had my eye: https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3105769/

I got one of these this year, killer bike. Great value, great components, clears 50c tires, tons of mounting points on frame and fork. It's on the burlier side of the gravel bike spectrum and 45c knobby tires are anchors around town pathways, but on gravel/light singletrack its a weapon.

There is an 13% import duty, but even after that its a pretty great deal.

Buddy has a topstone aluminum, great bike as well.

What was your cost to your door?
