Did someone fuck with the timing of the lights on 5th st this week, or is it in my head? I feel like the core is easier to hit greens on but the beltline is completely impossible now... but did have my fastest segment heading up 5th today... so overall better?

Looks like winter/snow is right around the corner.. my plan this season is to have 2 sets of wheels for my hybrid.
700x28 road tires on one and 26x1.75 studded winter tires on the other.

Will I be able to ride road tires in the middle of winter or should I just suck it up and swap them to 32c or 35c CX tires?

edit: screw it, ordered 2 Continental Ride Tour 700C Wire Tire from MEC, had to add a granola bar to get the free 50$ shipping cost

So looking at getting a winter bike and parking the road bike. What would be the better way to go with a ~500$ budget. My commute is pretty short and minimal incline / no big hills (7 min on road bike)

    1) Amazon has some fat bikes for around 500$. Likely pretty low quality but might work fine for a winter beater bike.

    2) Nab a used mountain bike for around 350 and then buy some winter tires for it

    3) ???

If your commute is 7 minutes, you probably don't even need to spend $500.
My commuter is a $120 road bike that I ride year round without even putting on knobby tires, although I'll do that this winter.

Well I really like my road bike and don’t want to trash it; maybe I’ll just find the cheapest hybrid bike I can and rock that I guess. I just dont have a frame of reference for things being slippery

Personally, I would grab a singlespeed or fixed gear for cheap. One that will fit some 700x32 or 35 winter tires. My boss buys a $100 used mountain bike every winter - usually an 80/90s Norco or similar.
Fat bikes are great for heavy snow days - but we really don't get that many. A $500 fat bike is bound to be heavy and not fun to ride...

My first few winters commuting I rode a cheap steel singlespeed with studded winter tires, then went to a CX bike built up from a $99 Nashbar frame, spare parts and winter tires
Then progressed to a fat bike for ~3 years (drivetrain is dead - it has maybe 3 gears that work now), and now usually ride a cheap steel fixed gear with 700x35 marathon winters.

My daughter rides her Trek Hybrid year round - also with Schwalbe marathons in the winter.

Is your ride only within the downtown area?
Bike paths gets cleared pretty quickly and you can get by with regular 700x32 and wider tires.
+1 on getting a used cheap (100-200) mtb or hybrid bike for now since you are not familiar with your route in winter conditions.
7min ride, you will probably not need winter tires much.. I commuted from the zoo or inglewood to downtown 2 years ago on my hybrid with regular 700x32c tires and had minimal problem.

I'm actually considering getting a cheap 26" as backup myself.

I may have some studded 700x35c that was only used for one season if interested.

Bridgeland, across the Edmonton trail bridge, onto 5th for a few blocks and then at work.

Thanks for the info. Even if I go at half speed it’s still a pretty short commute

You'll be fine with a beater MTB/Hybrid bike then.
I've been riding through George King bridge, Riverwalk down to 5th street for 18 months now and the bike lanes gets cleared pretty quickly, just watch out for clumps of snow in intersections and take turns slowly and you'll be fine.

My commute is usually around 6:30-7:30am

Picked this 26" beater winter bike earlier this evening, only decided to get another bike as I'm going to store this at my parents place to ride to work after dropping our daughter
hydraulic brakes and 3x10 setup, at least I will not feel bad destroying this during winter unlike the XTR components Norco that I bought earlier this summer.

My commute is about 8 minutes and I’ve been riding an old steel road bike (think it’s technically a touring bike) with city tires (Kenda k35) year round with no issues. I think I wussed out one day last winter because there was too much snow. But no incidents. Just have to go slow when it’s snowy or icy. Turns an 8 minute commute into 10. Switched to Kenda k161 knobby tires tonight so see how it goes this winter. So I think you should be fine on any old beater bike. Took off rear rack and put on new bar tape/saddle because race bike haha.

I’m still torn on riding in the winter... not really the easiest route... a few steep hills with sharp corners.

brings back memories of me growing up in the Renfrew area and I was working at the Edmonton Trail KFC after school.
My dad bought me a vintage road bike like that to get to work in the winter and never had any incidents, I even remember riding in the winter with a bucket of chicken in my arms a couple of times haha, but it was only a 2km bike ride

Haha nice. I too could be found at times riding this bike with grocery bags in one hand if I’m just stopping by on my way home. Either that or a shredded grocery bag from trying to ride it one handed and the bag gets shredded in the front spokes.

Today in winter mode. See how she performs this year. Was a little slick last year since the tires were bald, so hoping it makes a difference. Rode for the first time today with knobby tires since I was probably 10 years old and seems like there’s more rolling resistance and cornering seems a bit sketchier.

got the fenders and mitts installed on the beater 26", might be an interesting ride tomorrow.

out of curiosity but do you guys use different lubrication depending on the weather/season?
I just use this all year on all my bikes since I ride in the dry most of the time

but will be using the hybrid and beater during the winter

For winter - I use WD-40 to clean the chain, then. Finish Line Wet to lube.

^thanks, yeah I might go pick up some wet lube for the winter and see if I notice any difference.

rear-derailleur jammed this morning once I made it to downtown and couldn't change gears anymore, got into the building and saw that it was all covered in ice

Glad I didn't drive. Traffic looked horrible....fat bike was fine. We'll see how the commute home is.
