Default "Raise Alberta highway's speed limit to 120" petition

"Raise Alberta highway's speed limit to 120" petition here - started 3 days ago.

CTV news already picked it up in one of their news broadcasts, 120 kph speed limit on any of our divided highways seems reasonable to me.

There is a group called SenseAlberta (based of SenseBC) that is trying to do this in a more complete approach.

Here is the big post on Reddit about who they are and what they want to do
    https://www.reddit.com/r/alberta/com...etter_alberta/

Does anyone know how many signatures you need on a petition before the provincial government will look at it? I know for municipal government you need 10% for Council to take a vote on the item. While this petition wont make any actual changes. They might feel the dust in the wind and start talking about this.

Notley will likely never do it just out of the fact that driving at 120 vs 110 burns more fossil fuels.

But I signed anyways. Not sure if the province is obligated to consider online petitions, in many cases the obligation has to be paper petitions signed in person etc.

Arbitrarily setting it to 120 is as bad as arbitrarly setting it at anything else. They should do a study, evaluate that shit and set it based on the results.

I can see this being very, very bad.

People already drive 140km/h on QE2, if the speed limit is raised, they will also bump up their speed. Then you factor in that the majority of Semi's are speed limited to 110km/h or less, and you have a recipe for disaster.

IF we had 3 or more lanes (Think Coquihalla in BC) this could be viable as the slower vehicles MUST stay right, and IF they need to pass they use the middle lane, leaving the outside lane for people who want to speed.

Also, I don't feel very comfortable with captain rustbucket, with un-torqued wheels, loose front end, and likely a spare tire as a primary tire, attempting to travel at those speeds. They would need to implement mandatory vehicle inspections.

I would say make it like BC and 120K left lane only. And restrict the speed change to QE2 or other 2 lane divided highways only. I think all highways in alberta should be at least 110 though, its annoying to drive out to drumheller knowing the highway speed is only 100kph

They should also make QE2 3 lanes the entire way to edmonton.

This statement has been proven to be untrue. People will drive what speed they feel comfortable at regardless of speed limits. Although, In reality, the speed limit on the QE2 should be 130 kph. Personally I am a big fan of Montana's highway speed limits. As many know there are 4 different limits. Passenger vehicles can go 5-10 faster than trucks and the speed limit is reduced at night for both.

My dad laughed pretty hard when I told him there isn't a single highway in Alberta faster than 110km.h, I mean even Vancouver Island is 120 on the inland highway.

Drivers naturally drive at a speed they feel comfortable. You cannot assume that because they do 20 over at 100 that they will be driving 140 in a 120.
